Ignition distributor

Hello from Spain

can this movement or gap on the distributor cause irregular pinging noise?

That play looks normal, you're moving the mechanism against the mechanical advance springs.

If your engine is pinging, typical issue is is it has too much total ignition advance. What is the initial timing set at? Should be around 10 - 14 degrees of initial timing, with total advance no more than 36 degrees total.

Also the quality of the fuel has a lot to do with the pinging (pre-ignition). If it's a higher compression engine than the quality of fuel you are putting in the car, it will ping.

We have 87 octane regular quality unleaded at the pump and you usually can't go over 9:1 compression.

Also, take the rotor off by removing those two screws on the top. Make sure both of the springs are connected.

like racer x said that is normal, i watched your other videos about the engine noise, it just sounds like valves may need the lash set.
the cam seems mild but your gauge only shows 12 in vacuum at idle...my seat of the pants says it should be more.....

Thanks for the replys.

The problem starts with the higher summer temperatures. 91F-94F.
Gasoline 98 OCT (us 93).

Idle 840-880 RPM. Vacum idle 10-11.
Initial timing 12°, total 33°. Blue bushing, 2 blue springs. Mech advance.
Idle AFR 13-14. Driving AFR 13.5-14. LM2 in the car.
Compression 10.0-10.5. Highest is cyl. nr. 6 with -11.0.Water 190F. Oil 180F.
Cam is CompCam 31-760-8 / 288R
Starting the engine is no problem. No chock. No noise until engine heatet up.
The noise appers irregular on the driver side valve bank next to the distributer and the cyl. nr. 6 and 5. You can hear the nois aswel as little high clear note in the sidepipe.

You need to reduce the total timing or limit it. Reduce the initial timing to 10 degrees and see if it pings. Do you have an advance timing light to check total timing? My guess is total timing is more than the 33 degrees.

Premium fuel.

Racer_X 07-21-2013 01:51 PM

Why do you state the compression is higher at 11.0:1- in cylinder #6?
That will cause the pinging when compared to the others at 10.0 -10.5:1

Super unleaded 98 Oktane Gasoline is corresponding US Premium

-11.0 compression wil be checkt to morow morning. Aswell the valve lash and ignition timing. Comp Cam says 0.02 inch gap. Cold or warm engine ?
