Any Stainless Steel Bodied Cobras out there?
I've probably forgotten more info on Cobras than I would care to admit, however at one time it would be fair to say I know what I'm talking about concerning real Cobras(1960'S). I would say I know very little concerning the majority of Cobras on here.
Having just visited a fellow collector a question was brought up. He has a big "redneck garage'' sign in his garage and asked hey do you know of any Cobras that has a stainless steel body like one of the cars in your collection(not DeLorean).
He went on to say probably some A-rab did a chrome job or gold tone on one.
So I know about the aluminum bodied ones that are polished out, but has anyone ever chromed or had a stainless steel bodied cobra?
For you old timers on this site sorry if this was brought up before.:eek:

I've never heard of a stainless body before. Doesn't mean there isn't any! We sometimes do stainless chassis...

No sstl bodied Cobras have been made. Stainless is hard to work, and the complex curves would make it a real challenge, if even possible. The copper bodied Cobra is a Kirkham and owned by an acquaintance named Darren

Agreed. SS is not ductile enough. To form stainless steel into 'Cobra curves', there would need to be a lot of cutting and welding, just like on an E-type bonnet (XK-E hood).

Great pic Larry. Believe me I know about steel(stainless) even if it's been well over 115 years my family has been out of that business. I was thinking of the handful of Ford cars that were stamped out of stainless. Even though there was some damage to the equipment when it was done.
Now this copper car or "bronze" was I guess produced using aluminum bronze which means some copper was added to the aluminum. Makes sense since Kirkham produces aluminum bodies.
For historical purposes I was referring to the eleven Allegheny Ludlum Fords that were produced. |

Our copper and bronze cars are made form just that. Pure copper and pure bronze. They look amazing but are a royal pain to work with. They also add a significant amount of weight to the car.

Have to say these golden cars are beautiful. Personally have polished all metals on our prides and joy Cobra, muscle cars, Harleys and even one tractor. Don't know that I would personally want to own a fully polished metal bodied car, but could look a polished Cobra long enough to make my eyes bleed.

You could probably make one out of SS, but to keep the weight reasonable, the material would have to be paper thin. Being so thin would make it somewhat easier to work with.
Not sure what the benefit would be though besides it would last a super long time, but considering how often most of these cars are driven, it probably wouldn't be an issue.

When I first saw that picture of the bronze car I thought why the hell didn't the Mercer Cobra look like that! I mean it was for the copper guys right? It could have been a real cobra with an amazing body.
