Actually that is not really true.

Many (most?) replicas are DOT compliant, however they are not NHTSA compliant. DOT sets standards for components i.e. brake hoses are double crimped, have compilant sheathing, etc. That is a DOT standard. So is windshield glass meeting AS1 DOT standards, seat belt certification, etc. NHTSA sets standards of performance i.e. braking distance, interior materials flammability, crash standards and so on.

Most of the parts you purchase to build a replica are DOT approved. If you got brake hoses at the auto parts store they are approved. If you used DOT brake fluid, ditto. Sealed beam headlamps, ditto again.

Many people confuse DOT with NHTSA, they are not the same.

Are there any instances where the tires gave way while driving on the road?

bwcobra15 10-23-2013 08:28 AM

Just curious - I don't know the answer. But why does every new 427 that leaves Provo appear to be riding on billboards? Seems to me if they are good enough for the Kirkhams.....

I agree with the first sentence. EDIT: Cobras are NOT Federally approved, and who cares what agency.

I would also add that nearly all cars make contact with the road in only 4 spots. Personally, I would want those 4 contact spots to be extraordinarily safe.

My Kirkham left Provo with Yokohama's (street radials).

Well, I guess I came as close as I care to.

Evan,
There are pics of Avons with GOODYEAR stenciled lettering (from Raceline Digital) floating around but you will be disappointed IMO due to what I perceive as your attention to detail.
They may look OK from a distance but they don't buldge like the BB's.

REAL 1 10-23-2013 03:44 PM

Couldn't find the pics.

Thanks tough.

Does anyone know if Avons have any history with Cobras????

Bernica 10-23-2013 03:57 PM

I have had a few folks say good things about the G7 and G12 Goodyears, but can't speak first-hand. Anyone here using them or experience with them?

Yes, they do, based upon the "Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon" theory.

I'm curious as well, my billboards are due for a replace- wonder if the G7's have the same sidewall cracking issue. Unfortunate the G7's don't have the "EAGLE" portion of the lettering on the sidewall, but likely easy to add with a stencil.

Also race tires without additves for long term use. Likely the same situation.

Race tires are race tires, street tires are street tires. Neither does the others job well.

I think Mark IV is right. Avon's site clearly states "competition compound" but also makes a point of stating "DOT Approved" and that they are radial tires. I'm hearing scores of 9 or 10 on dry pavement and near zero in the wet.

I don't think there exists the "perfect all-everything tire" for a Cobra that we all wish was out there.

No easy answer to this conundrum! %/

There are plenty of Cobra and GT40 owners using their Avons for racing.

And I don't know many folks running their Cobra's, GT40's or what have you, in the wet/rain. So maybe that zero is because not many, if any, have any experience on wet pavement.

All I know is that I'm NOT ever going to be an owner of Billboards for any reason except possibly to roll on and off a trailer to shows.

Botox injections? Maybe regular massages? Hell, I know plenty of guys that pay for that for their wives for other forms other forms of "long term use".

Sorry, had to do it.

Don't know about history, but I went to a classic car race at Paul Ricard here in France a couple of weeks ago, and all (8) Cobras and all (5) GT40's were running Avons

BTW, if the poll is correct, at this point, 9 out of 28 respondents (32%) have had problems with their Billboards.
