Frustration .. noises and squeaks
Hello,
My car runs & stops great, it even looks great.. BUT it drives like a karting car.:( i'll try to explain, my frustration comes from the noises and squeaks it makes each time i run over a small bump or a crack in the road. I removed the seats and installed rubber brackets, i reinforced all the nuts and bolts of the vehicle but it still makes noises. Shock absorbers are new and adjusted. The driving experience is lousy except the speed and the smiles on everybody's faces. Any suggestions ? Thx |
Nothing more frustrating than squeaks and rattles. Aside from tearing the car all apart and putting it back together,finding the causes are a pain. It would be easier to have someone ride with you and focus on where the noises are coming from. Spend some time walking around the car use the butt of your hand see if you can recreate these noises. Open the hood and trunk lid do the same thing even with the car on a lift eventually you will find the sources of your frustration.
Keep in mind these cars ride stiff because of what they are and were never meant to be luxo cruisers. |

Sell what you have and buy a Superformance.

Even a Superformance has to have everything set right or it rattles. My doors are not set up right and they rattle. I've got almost 12,000 miles on my SPF. I have to take the time to adjust the doors and get the rattles out. Any vehicle has to be adjusted and lubricated properly or it will rattle.

Sounds to me like the sidepipes are overly restricted and not achieving the factory spec 130 decibels.

Often times doner parts are used for completion, consequently things like suspension bushings are not replaced and sometimes need attention. Other items such as steering column attachment or bushings, Ball joints, steering tie rods, shock mounts, Emergency brake cables and hardware under the floorboard or tunnel. Next focus on the dashboard, sometimes it can rattle at the attaching points or at the top edge near the cowl. Go over all the nuts and bolts throughout the entire car, this will take some time. You might find it prudent to replace some fasteners with nylock type nuts and better grade bolts. Lastly look at the entire exhaust system, check to see if it is contacting any of the frame or other parts of the car. Good luck...just take your time and be thourough.

Squeaks and rattles
Your car is not loud enough, I never even knew my transmission howled until I put on new mufflers last year. I still would not be able to hear a squeak or rattle if my life depended on it even with the new muffler.

My bet is on the bushings for your A Arms and rear control arms. The step where your should use silicone grease may have been omitted.

Did you buy or build your roadster? What make is it / how old is it?
Are they squeaks like control arms / joints? or squeaks like panels rubbing? If they are joints / bearings, check that they are sufficiently greased (if the car is older, maybe it needs to be serviced) or replace any worn items (ball joints). If they are panels rubbing, look for shiny spots and apply some silicone or possibly replace a loose rivet. Can you replicate any of the noises as it is sitting still and chase them down? More detail, would help. Good luck |
Your joints may be loading the bushings
As others have said, all mounting points going to the frame need to be greased. Pull apart 1 mount at a time to no effect alignment of front or rearend. Grease bushings and bolts and both surfaces and reassembly. Do this to each mount. put car back on ground and tighten bolt and nut to spec. This will stop binding of joint. Start in front end and work your way around the car, 1 corner at a time. Shock mounts too. Don't over tighten nuts either. This will causing binding too. The noise is suspension if going over bumps. Rattles will be body noises or exhaust. Chassic ears will help track down location. Last side note, you brought a cobra, It's loud, noisy, clunky, nasty, and abusive. You could spend the next year removing noises the car makes with foam, insolator backing material, and other noise reducer tricks.
My other thought is the suspension springs are to high for what you where looking for. Maybe drop the spring rate 100 pounds and roadtest the car. If the shocks are adjustable on compression lower the setting. You will lose car handling and may help for a softer ride. Rick L. |

I took a ride yesterday with a friend , we believe the noises are between the chassic to the body. It's like a "BOOM" when you drive over a bump.. What connects the chassis to the body ? Where can i look under the car to find a direction ? Sorry for my simple questions. some of u are probably smiling.. Thx !! |
Sounds like you are hitting either your drive shaft on your tunnel or your pumpkin is hitting the top of your frame. Squirt some silicone on top of your pumpkin (maybe a half inch tall-shaving cream will work too) and take a drive and see if you have any signs of silicone or shaving cream above your pumpkin. If so you may need to make some adjustments to your ride heigth.
Usually your body will be fastened behind your side pipes, in the rear trunk area and inside your engine bay. I doubt of that is your problem. |
