Firing Order Ford FE390 - need help !
Hi guys,
I have a Cobra with a Ford FE390 engine in my shop. The distributor is marked with numbers and if I believe these numbers ( clockwise ), the firing order is 1 5 4 3 7 2 6 8. Is this correct ? I thought, that the correct firing-order for these engines is 1 5 4 2 6 3 7 8.... Thanks, Stephan |
Per my Ford FE Engine book all firing orders except for the 351s are what you gave above. Try to separate the 7 & 8 wires some as the high energy ignitions can cause an arch between them if one gets a weak place in the insulation.
I thought, that the correct firing-order for these engines is 1 5 4 2 6 3 7 8.... However they can be wired to fire in a different order if you want to mess with it and I can see no really good reason to do so. The only ones that I ever saw that did that were on the 351s. Ron |
15426378, counter clockwise.

Probably has a small block distributor cap on it.

Ok, I think I will go with 1 5 4 2 6 3 7 8.....

They use the same cap, big & small block.

Firing order
The firing order is determined by the cam not the block (small or large). HO Ford engines (usually 302s) have their own firing order. The cap makes no difference in the firing order, unless it only has seven leads.
|
That is soo true.:D All ford distributors from 57-73 use the same cap with just #1 molded on. Firing order is determined by the cam.

I took his post to mean it was an odd-ball cap with molded in terminal numbers - I probably misunderstood since he actually said distributor was marked.

Did it work for you? if not, three things come to mind: 1: Your distributor is off a tooth or two and/or is not indexed correctly 2: You are not setting up your plugs based on proper #1 location on the distributor cap. 3: You are not wiring them up in the proper engine rotation. http://ww2.justanswer.com/uploads/s4...ring_order.jpg |
