Since The Gumball Rally started me on this crazy trip, those are the vents I want to put in. They look fantastic.
|
Thanks for all the input & pics guys, I favor the Maier Racing GT 500 louvers that Dallas installed . I think they look the best.
Blas: yeah, it's permanent, but no worries as I happen to have a SPARE HOOD !!. I figured I could modify one if necessary to clear the webers, and keep the other stock. |
Thor: What started me down the Cobra path was Peter Klutt's TV show "Legendary Motorcars" show many years ago, where he was restoring an original (289 or 427, don't remember which), and one thing he had to do is remove two hood vents and patch the holes. I never missed a segment of that show, and now it's back on Velocity tv on tues @ 10 pm.
|
Migge: I've seen those on flea-bay, and actually the surface mounting with poprivets (which on any other car would be considered "tacky") actually works on the Cobra, since the adjcent air scoop is done the same way, not to mention the pop rivets at the front of the hood.

In the interest of full disclosure I found my Maier louvers needed quite a bit of work to make them look good. I filled in a few pinholes and areas that were thin, sprayed them a couple of times with high build primer and spent far more time than I would have liked sanding them smooth. And sanding those corners was a pita for sure.
Maybe your set will be better, but be aware just in case. |
Dallas: I saw a pair on flea-bay that were fiberglass, seller said they were gt500, new, never installed, don't know if the were Maier's, but he said they were not usable as recieved, needing finishing, and the openings weren't even cut out !!
Don't think I'll do those after all, I'll try something else. |
|
I like that.
Can we see more details and maybe a couple of close ups and what it looks like under the hood? |
Check the area around the radiator intake. Is that area well sealed? I put weather stripping around the radiator and cowl along with a bigger radiator and it solved my issues.
You could actually hear the difference in how the air circulated and is now pulling through all the radiator surface instead of around it. |

Sorry to steal a spot here. I'm looking to poss buy this car. It has louvers also. If caught in the rain wouldn't that cause a bit of a problem?
|
Nah.....just water spots on the polished aluminum. No running issues.
|
Water getting in through the louvers is the least of your problems with a topless car

These are the louvers on COB6008:

Interesting. They are all different lengths on COB6008, so would need multiple tools to punch them.

Thanks G-Pete. I just educated myself!
[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_YcgwxjmGS4]Louvers in a Bead Roller? - YouTube[/ame] Last time I punched louvres in a car hood was ..... a long time a go. That was with a conventional punch and die. Cheers, Glen |
