California Legacy Plates
The 1960's " replica " black plate has 7103 orders and needs less than 400 to hit the 7500 requirement. It is a legal way to run a black plate. The 1950's and 1970's need many more gear heads to sign up. The DMV site below will provide information on the process.

I'll begin to get excited when the counter shows 7499. ;)
But it is within striking distance before the Jan 1, 2015 deadline.

What do you mean by back plate?
You'll be able to get any number in a black/yellow, right?

They only update the counter periodically. It's been at 7,103 for a few months, so I'll bet it's close by now.
