Slightly different alternator question
All,
I've searched and searched and could use some additional help.. I'm using a 3G alternator and did not use the green output wire (I) as I do not have the instrument light. I'm not getting any voltage at this point. The yellow (A) is hooked up to the battery, and the wh/blk (S) is tied to the spade connector at the alternator. So my question, do I need to tie the green wire (I) to the switched ignition source to "excite" the internal regulator? I've seen one diagram with it wired this way. If so, is there a resistor needed? I know some go through the indicator light. And if the answer is yes, can I use the same 12 volt ignition wire feeding my Mallory Hifire distro (only because the wire loom is already in place and I'd rather not pull it apart). Note: the alternator was tested and it works fine. Thanks in advance! Mike |
Yes, you need an exciter wire. Usually a resistor is used in parallel with a light so if the light burns out, there's still voltage on the exciter wire. Wire going to the distributor should work.
