Supercharged Unique Motors Cobra

Dear Club Cobra Members,

I'm a new member and have never owned a Cobra but am strongly considering ordering a "turn key" 427 model from Unique Motorcars with a big block 428 FE (converted to 4 bolt mains) running through a 5 speed. I really want a barn burner in the quarter mile and am thinking about a centrifugal supercharger. The engine builder however is recommending a normally aspirated engine with about 500 horsepower and thinks the supercharger is overkill; says the car will already be difficult enough to launch as it is. As much as I don't want it should I consider a C6 automatic tranny for optimum quarter mile times?

Any thoughts or comments regarding the supercharger and/or automatic tranny would be much appreciated.

Sincerely,
Chad Tidlund

Follow your dream and go with the supercharger, other wise you will alway wonder, "what if"......

Ps you can always step it down.

I've got a Cobra with a 428, and I've got a supercharger [Procharger F1R] that is currently on my 540fe tunnelport engine.

After looking at the engine bay on my Cobra I don't see any way that it will fit...........

Here is the supercharged 540fe in my Mustang.

Here is a YT video of a guy with the same supercharger as mine on a 428fe.

Non aero GoKart w/ a V-8, known to be a poor handling car. Put as much horsepower into her, as you like. There is a certain point to wich you will have diminishing returns. That point may be a lot lower than you dream.

Chad,

Are you only planning to drag racing the car?

500hp in a 90" wheelbase, 2,500lb car is overkill as it is. Factually, it only takes 210hp in a car like a Cobra to get you way over your head. Don't get caught up in the HP numbers as the power to weight is where you want to be. Realistically, I'd say 350-400 rear wheel HP is more than you'll ever need, and will be more streetable.......

Just my two cents

My post pretty much supported what Bill is saying... I have 575hp and 690tq pushed by a turbo...it's nice to talk about it, but I think it's overkill... What I normally tell people who have never driven a light car is to go drive a corvette or Porsche or any other performance car that seems WAY fast....then break out your calculator... take the weight of the car and divide it by the horsepower and then decide...

I will do one with you based on my car... and say...the 2014 Z51 Corvette

Corvette is approx. 3300 lbs and produces +/- 402 hp to the wheels = 8.2
My Cobra is 2550 lbs and produces 575hp to the wheels = 4.4

Smaller number means more power to weight and feels WAY faster....

this is not to say that my Cobra will ever perform to the Corvette standard....because the power is simply not useable mechanically or Aerodynamically.

If I am ever tired or not feeling 100%, I will pass on ever getting behind the wheel. At a 4.4 power/weight and max torque hitting at only 3200 RPM, bad things happen very fast!

But....in the end....your car!!! Do what makes you happy...life is too short!

Chad, how fast do you want to go? Be aware that if your running over 135 mph in the 1/4 you will be req'd to have a full NHRA certified cage and license as well as everything else that goes along with it.

Regarding the auto vs manual, the auto will likely be quicker and easier to control, but you can be plenty quick with a manual if that's what you prefer to run.

Personally, I think there is nothing wrong with running tons of hp as long as your car is set up properly and you exercise some restraint. There are multiple cars here running over 600 hp and handle it just fine. Cheers.

Kind of depends on the track some are more loose than others. We have lots of 9 second 145 mph cars on my CTS-V forum and none of them have roll bars of any kind.

Eric what did you post?

There is another possible reason he wants a supercharger.

Its the same reason I put one on my wife's 347 cid, 65 Mustang fastback, and that is that you can have a relatively tame cam, and still make power.

No shaky idle, no problems overheating at stoplights, just power via boost when you want it.

pretty much what I posted above...not sure what happened.

Brings back memories of when trying to decide on the hp level for our car. Certainly appreciated all the advise and concern over building a big block car but it made me want one even more. Now with 550+hp love it! These big inch engines also cruise just fine especially with OD trans.
Never forget:

" It is Better to Have it and Not Need it than to Need it and Not Have it!"
