Hi everybody,

My 1966 427SC Cobra replica by Unique Motorcars, built in 1995 by HRE Motors, and which I recently bought from another gentleman from this forum, is registered in NY as a "1996 CUSTO" with a strange but perfectly legal "NY+5 digits" VIN number. Apparently the previous owner did a good job at making it all legal and clean, my new registration and inspection went like a walk in the park.

My FFR is titled in Arizona as a 1965 Shelby Special Construction Roadster. The "first registered" date is 06/1965. No DOT or smog inspections required. Plates are historic.

I have a question that might require input from NED. How many 427 Cobras were ever registered with any DMV as 1965's? I believe all the SC's were all sold in 1966 or later and know that Dick Smiths Cobra was registered as a 1966. Weren't all the early 3000 cars sold as race cars and not registered?

My guess is, you're right. Even the earliest 427 Cobras sold didn't make it into customers' hands until the fall of '65, and most were labeled right on the Shelby American invoice as a "1966 Cobra." And those that weren't would likely have been titled as 1966s because that's how car dealers perceived them.

My Classic Roadsters is registered with a NY-73685 vin; and as required here in the great state of NY, as a 2014 custom. No choice in the matter...glad it's finally done.

My Classic Roadster II is recorded here in Idaho as a 1965 Ford Cobra Convertible with a "blind" note as being a Replica.
The car was produced in 2005 and came up from the SF Bay Area where it had a year make assignment as 2005.
It has the SB100 assignment but here in my part of Southern Idaho we don't have smog stations.
The gal at DMV really had a hard time trying to assign it.
To be straight I did not solicit the "1965 Cobra" title. That is the way it's done here in Idaho.
When I'm asked about the car and is it real the proper reply always is "it's a Classic Roadster II 1965 Cobra Replica" One person told me I was wrong and it has to be an original. I thought about correcting him but then.....
And yes, my son and drove it back home. What a kick of a road trip. 800 miles.

Yeah, amazing what happens when only facts are present :) (except for this comment from the peanut gallery.)

So far so good.

What I see is that there are some places that have endorsed or recognized the "year it represents" more than others. It would be interesting to see a state by state comparison of exactly how they are interpreted.

The fact and only the facts.

My SPF is registered in PR as a Ford Shelby Cobra 1965. Same in the title of ownership.

Oh so funny! When we first went to our new house for the first week or so in Vegas they had Dragnet on one of the local TV channels (over the air, not cable). Now they've shifted things around. Webb's delivery was so great. "Just the facts maam"

I believe that Ned is correct
CSX-3020 was invoiced to Shelby American on 1/26/65 and is titled as a 1966 Shelby Cobra

Cobra #3170 06-24-2014 09:44 PM

1965 Cobra

So why are all you guys calling your Cobra's 1965's? I think the 1965 myth started in the replica community along with calling them Shelby Cobra's.
I am repeating myself here, but when they were new everybody called them AC Cobras at least on the west coast.

I'm sure they're were originally called 1965's, at least in CA, because smog pumps/devices were fitted to cars starting in 1966.

I call mine a 1965 because that's what the MSO from Shelby says.

bret a ewing 06-25-2014 09:06 AM

True, here is what an MSO looks like:

http://www.clubcobra.com/forums/all-...-question.html

ChicagoChris 06-25-2014 09:16 AM

My MSO also identified my car as a 1965 Shelby Cobra and the IL Sec of State titled it as such.

Nedsel 06-25-2014 10:41 AM

But, it should be known that Shelby's sleight-of-hand here was to claim that "1965" was the model number rather than the year. Pretty standard operating procedure for him. Had he designated the cars "Best-ever Shelby Cobras" the title would have said that instead.

Actually, the continuation series MSO says Model Year: 1965

There may still be some slight of hand involved but it clearly says year and that's the DMV uses, at least in my state.
