Updating the story, this car was never Lance's. I asked Carroll about it two years before his death, and he recalled the circumstances of the car's purchase as if it had occurred last week. It happened that Lance's half-brother, Richard, was goofing off in Europe, and their dad, Count Reventlow, asked Lance if he knew some way to encourage his return to the US. Lance suggested that buying Richard a Cobra (from Lance's friend Shelby) might induce him to come home. The Count authorized Lance to make the deal, and Lance ordered the car as he saw fit, with every option - comp and street alike - simply because he figured the more options the better. Unfortunately, the effort didn't work, as Richard said "Thanks a lot" stayed in Europe. After several months, the Count told Lance to simply sell the car, which he did. Lance drove the car only far enough to put it in storage, and, contrary to the silly suggestions offered up by one of CC's favorite critics, he NEVER raced it, as it was never his.

So if not owned by Lance then owned by who, the Count? Lance ordered it, took receipt of it, placed it into storage, took it out of storage and sold it. It had to be owned by somebody, the only two players here are Lance and the Count.

Hence my use of quotation marks in my original post. I remember your explanation from the last time this car crossed the auction block.

Well somebody ordered the car, maybe the butler.

Yep, Lance ordered the car and paid for it, using his dad's cash. And license plates were issued for the car as well, but it is not clear in whose name they were placed. So Lance bought it and later sold it. He was acting as an agent for his father on behalf of his brother. So, do we say he owned it? Sure, if you want to. But at this point, does it really matter? The car is known as the former Lance Reventlow Cobra, but we know he never considered it his car.
