Inner fender liner Adhesive?? Please help
I bought some new 1/8" Neoprene to line the inner fender. I'm trying to find out what adhesive to use. I was going to use 3M 5200 Marine Adhesive Sealant, but I read / told that it might bleed through the paint. Then I read about 3M™ Scotch-Weld™ Nitrile High Performance Rubber And Gasket Adhesive 847. I tried that, and no good. The neoprene kept falling down. If I look at my drivers side well someone redid that whole inner fender and the adhesive that was used was hard as a rock. Kinda like epoxy. Don't know what it is. Please help ..I really want to get this done tomorrow.

I started out using 3M 90 spray adhesive on mine. It's pretty expensive, so I tried the 3M 77 and it worked just as well for a better price. I also ran a bead of black silicone rtv around all of the edges and seams to keep the dirt out. Still looks and works great after 6 years.

I tired the 3M 90 spray and I couldn't get it to work very well at all. It must be an installer (me) problem. The inside of the SPF body is already coated with something to protect it a little and maybe that is why I couldn't get it to stick. What have others used?

Where can you purchase the 3M 77 ?
Have you had any problem with it leaking through the paint?
I'm purchasing 1' X 25" wide 1/8" thick Neoprene Rubber for $41.00. is that a reasonable price?

Most contact cements don't have that high of a temperature rating and the top of fenders get pretty warm in the sun. The best type of contact cement to use on these cars is the Landau Top contact cement that is for vinyl tops and is heat resistant. However, I've only seen it in gallon cans and it's not cheap but it's good. Can be brushed or rolled on.

I ended up using 3M 847 in 1qt can. I talked to a few people and 3M about it. The trick is to put it on and let it sit for a good 5 min. Coat inner fender and neoprene. Touch it with your finger. Nothing should come off. I did the entire inner fender in pieces. Filled all the seems with Black RTV. It's solid now. Too bad I didn't find it was coming loose before I found the spider crack!:CRY:

I got 4 12x12 1/8" sheets on ebay for $27 shipped. This...............I used almost 4 sheets to do the whole rear well.

I just tried 3M77 and it did not work out well for me. Do you have to coat both liner and fender?

Yes, and you have to wait a bit for it to "tack up". If you just try to spray it on, it will just fall off.
Spray both the liner and fender, let it tack up, then apply. It works very well. |

SKINNEDR, the black rtv is just silicone window sealant from Lowe's in the caulk gun size. It comes in lots of colors. I use 3M 77 and 90 pretty regularly at work, and I generally wait about 10 minutes before I attach anything together with it.
