Anyone brush existing polished ally?

Now that I'm powder coating the quickjacks and roll bar, I'd like to seriously consider brushing my polished stripes. I like the brushed stripes on brushed body look.

Who has ever brushed over a polished finish?
I'm considering wet sanding with an 400 grit, to get a nice but subtle contrast to the body.
Since this will be irreversible, to me anyway, I'd appreciate some input.
Polishing is just so...not my style.
I'm horrible at it.

I went from brushed to full polish, back to brushed and then added polished stripes.

Just tape the stripe edges and use a sanding sponge. Go one direction and complete strokes from one end to the other.

Brushed to polished to brushed to polished stripes?!?! You sir, are a nut ;)

What do mean by sanding sponge? The ones that have the grit applied to foam wedges at Home Depot?

Rodney, having gone from filed to polished, to brushing parts, in my home garage...
All I can say is - it ain't rocket science.
The only skills you need is patience...
A lot of patience.

Just take your time and try to make long smooth even strokes.
Any grits will work, it just depends how obvious you want the brushed stripes to stand out from the rest of the body.

I've used grits ranging from 120 to 5000.
The foam block ones I found easiest to manage on the curved body parts.

Good luck with it.

I appreciate the input.
If I do it, it sounds like the foam blocks would work, and I could experiment on an ally panel I have.
It's the hood scoop that scares me. Then again, I'm no perfectionist. :D

Sanded/brushed the old polished stripes

Well, she's almost done. Here's a closeup of the nose.
I started with 600, then used an 800/1000 3M pad.
Thanks for the suggestions, especially to Steve (King-cobra) on the phone.

At a low angle, it almost seems polished. More direct on, brushed.

Looks bee-U-tee-full.

Since you're now an expert, can you come up here and re-brush my stripes? And after that's done can you re-polish the rest of the body? :)

rodneym 08-15-2014 05:12 PM

Thanks!
There's only one part left around here that gets polished and I assure you, you don't want any part of that.

Looks nice! How's about a before & after shot of the car?

rodneym 08-16-2014 11:47 AM

*13*,
As soon as I get my wheels, I'll take some 'duplicate' shots of existing pics and compare.
As I said before, at certain angles the brush is really there, at others, almost none. Kind of a fine directional satin

Here's a quarter. Now go call your Momma and tell her you done good!

Looks terrific!
