Very smart, but they're far too clean and crisp for my liking I'm afraid. I also struggle with the idea of putting Goodyear lettering on Avon tyres. :o

Avon is a perfectly credible and acceptable brand and they were used in period, so I'm happy to have AVON on my Avon tyres. :3DSMILE:

Anyone know where in the US you can purchase them?

bmwdb10 09-18-2014 11:19 AM

Now there you go! LOVE AVONS!

I used white flexible plastic primer in a spray can and a stencil I cut on sticky vinyl.

Grabbed the wrong pic.... this is what they look like now after the paint darkens. I refreshed the letters after I painted the wheels black.

If you do not like putting 'Goodyear' lettering, it sounds like Tredwear will do custom lettering or graphics. Still seems easier going this route than a stencil and paint.

Have heard you can use white Plastidip spray too. Apparently, it stays on for years.

I have a Roland vinyl cutter at work so when the time comes, I will design and cut a template complete with distress marks to afford that worn look.

How much was it to buy the set of Avons?

I used the Tred letters. I tried Plasticdip spray and it stayed on about 2 short drives even though I prepped the tires with mineral spirits and cleaning pads. I got my Avons packaged with my wheel purchase from Vintage.

The GT 40 is beautiful!

Here's a quote from Stuckey Tyres
Avon CR6ZZ 295/50/15 $625 each
Avon CR6ZZ 245/60/15 $535 each

Total $2350 fitted and balanced

FatBoy 09-18-2014 11:54 PM

I paid £1,200 (around $1,900) fitted and balanced, but I'm a little closer to where they're made. :)
That was from a company called BMTR in Birmingham, UK. I don't know how much it would be to ship a set to you.

As I said, far to clean and crisp for what I'm after. I want them to get scuffed and faded over time. :)

You can take it for a drive if you want Nick. I think I can trust you. ;)

nikbj68 09-19-2014 05:08 AM

As long as I don`t have to clean it afterwards....Nah, like Clarkson once said, "...if it was mine, I`d lick it clean every night!!!

Beautiful car, but I think Firestone's going to cut off your sponsorship

Ted

bmwdb10 09-19-2014 08:28 AM

Thanks guys.....

I am surprised how many people pick up on the Firestone stickers with Avons on the car. Same with my last Cobra when I replaced the Goodyears with the Avons. Oh well... Anyone know of any nice vintage Avon stickers?

Mongoose930 09-19-2014 09:31 AM

Some on ebay UK:

Btw: the freshest Avon tires has Roger Krause in the US. Roger Kraus Racing Ent., Inc.- Castro Valley, CA.. They don't store these tires for years and sell it to you. Besides the customer service is outstanding.

Hi Glen,

It's probably easier for me to find out which font and letter size was used and the radius of the arc so that you can recreate it. I could scan the template for you, but I'm not sure that would help you.
