Actually Shelby was planning on putting in a 427 SOHC in a Daytona Coupe (CSX2286) for the 1964 LeMans race. Ford was delayed in getting the Cammer engine to Shelby, and so got him an aluminum 390 with 58 mm Webers instead. The 390 engine was put into the car, before the project was shelved. CSX2286 did race at LeMans in 1965 with a 289 engine.

I did not know about the cammer for the Daytona coupe. One thing that I did come across in the Holman Moody book is that they did test a cammer in a GT40 for Daytona but since it was not faster than a pushrod FE they did not go the cammer route. I have never seen a picture of it as I wonder how they dealt with all the fitment issues.

I picked this era up a couple years ago ,some may remember as it was advertised here.
I have learned some cammer trivia ,that reproduction heads have external oil returns exposed at the rear of the head and aluminum.the original cammer heads were cast iron and
drain back was internal ,a unknown few were aluminun and never sold only promoted to sponsered racers . this cammer is one of the few aluminum head original, came from randal richie of les richie fame performance assoc.

Very cool! I saw this car on Youtube. The motor sounds menacing.

I remember seeing a cammer in a cobra replica at the Texas Cobra Club spring event in San Marcos some years ago. IIRC Jay Nordstrom brought it. I never heard it run, though, nor did I ever hear what brand replica it was.
Cheers!

Do Tunnel Ports and Cammers share the same intake manifold?

Anyone say Cammer?
How about the original Ford "Cammer"?
None of this Single Overhead Cam nonsense, and tiny 427 cubic inches.
Try 1100 cubic inches with Dual Overhead Cams. It's even a Side-Oiler, to boot!

No. They don't interchange with each other, and neither will work with any other FE heads.
The 427 SOHC uses a unique intake that does not at all resemble any other FE part. Closer to a 429/460 intake from an external appearance, the SOHC intake does not have the characteristic FE valve cover rail.
The 427 tunnel-port intakes use a unique bolt pattern and port layout; they do not mount to any of the more common FE wedge heads.

I might actually have my cammer back in the car running shortly, after making new heads and and a bunch of other parts we have everything needed for reassembly I think.

Did Cammers only come with alum heads, or are there steel heads versions as well.
Thanks Dean

Wow, hasn't been a while. I had assumed you had put your Cammer back together some time ago. In any event, best of luck and please post up a thread about your Cammer or add to your old thread. Thanks.

Original alloy Cammer heads are rare. The vast majority of original Cammers came with steel heads.

It's been an extremely long road and we have remanufactured a lot of parts and also reengineered things to get better longevity from the engine and yes over 2 years not being able to enjoy my cobra is killing me

I hear your pain. However, the bright side is that you can use the knowledge from what was done to make your second time around better. It took me 15 months to sort out the mess that Bill Andrews from HRE Motorcars created. I look at what he did as the foundation of what not to do and now that my car is done, I know now that the proper engineering and workmanship has been implemented in all aspects. It was a painful and costly exercise but sometimes you have to take a step back to take a few steps forward.
