help with OHIO Cobra registration
Gentlemen, good day! I have a Cobra for sale and have a very nice buyer in Ohio who wants the car. I talked with him and actually called the DMV there how to register the car without all the smog and stuff needed for most cars.
I didn't actually get a clear answer yet..so I figured someone here has to be in Ohio and would know. My car has the SB 100 tag and it is never going to need any smog or whatever here in Cali. But, selling to Ohio, I am not sure the rules or how to make that work. So.........chime in and give me some help and ideas. thanks, very much. fred z |
If the car has a newer title, meaning the car isn't listed as a 1965 Cobra, it is a piece of cake. He buys the car and brings it to Ohio. He needs to take it toa facility (most dealerships) and they verify the vin matches the title. Then the title is transferred. You MUST notarize the title out of your name by a notary or he will have a problem.
For plates, he just needs to apply for Collectors Plates. That allows him to bypass all emissions testing. The SB100 means nothing here. Collectors plates are purchased each year like regular plates from the BMV. If it is titled as a 1965, i think he will have issues. One last thing. As long as you do not get ridiculous, nobody really knows what he paid for the car. He will have to pay sales tax on the car. In my county, it is 8%, plus other fees. So if he paid you $50,000 for the car and you forgot the last zero, it would probably make his life easier. I am not advocating cheating the state out of sales tax, but accidents do happen. One thing I forgot to mention. I live in a county that requires emission testing. If you live in a county that does not, you can probably have the car registered with regular plates without a problem. |
Everything Joyridin' says is correct. The only thing I will add from my experience of bringing a car from out of state is...I went to 3 different DMV stations and got 3 different stories on what I needed to do to get the car registered. I don't think the state does a very good job of educating the DMV employees on these issues. Good luck.

I registered mine in Columbus as a 1966. Not even a problem, simple creation of a new title and was issued with no questions. Car came from Virginia.

My EM I bought from Kentucky and had to have a dealer inspect the VIN...no problem. My ERA I bought with a Maryland title, just took title in and they gave me an Ohio title.
