Detroit Bill, you and I definitely have similar goals for our cars and tires. Should I want to do a 1st and 2nd gear spirited run I want the car to hook. I want to experience what my car and engine has to offer. I like the 15" period correct look and if the Avon tires aren't giving up much in the straight line compared to a 17" wheel that is good to know. Yet, the larger diameter wheels with the massive tires are growing on me. For me, if I choose to go 17's or 18's I would get a painted or cast center and then paint them satin black with the plasti-dip. I do not want to powder coat the rims black should I ever want the other look. To me the black wheels sorta make the short sidewall not as noticeable. The problem with the larger 275 tires on front are several owners experience the tire rubbing the frame full lock. I do not like or want that. IMHO The SPF does not have a tight turning radius unless you blip the throttle and sling the rearend. If I did go with a taller rim, I would more than likely use a 8" wide rim up front with a 245, 255 tire. I would appreciate pics of that wheel combination. Also, I have not checked with Roger Kraus for as shipped to my door cost for the Avons but I'm sure it will be half the cost or more than the new larger wheels and tires. Something for me to consider....

So the way I look at it, I have had these tires for about 9 years and put about 25,000 plus miles on them. Only the right rear wore bad down to the wear bars. I will pull them off, put the fronts on Craigs list and sell them for $200. When I bought the car it had 315/45/17 F1 Supercar Goodyears on it. I had two sets. The rear tires I got about 5,000 miles out of each set. The 335 are 12.5" wide compared to around 11.2" with the 315's. At some point once all the 335/35/17 are gone, I would prefer to get 18" wheels for the rear. BTW, I like the look of the Cobra photo's you posted. Scott |
For a Kirkham or Continuation 15's seem to be the norm. 18's on this Superformance look good, now where's the SS polish for those side pipes?

Avons
Have you Avon users done something to the inner fender wells to prevent damage to the fiberglass/aluminum from stones being thrown up?
If so what? Thanks |

I have heard a rock hits the back of the glass and puts a "star" in the paint.

If it's inside wheel wells or on the back side of a painted surface, perhaps: a) Plasti Dip; b) undercoating; or c) truck bed liner. Plasti Dip is the thinnest, available in multiple colours (including clear) and it can be peeled off if you decide you don't like it. Undercoating and truck bed liner are much thicker, heavier and I think pretty much permanent once they've dried or set.

Please don't mistake Avons with Good Year Billboards.

The Billboards throw lots of sh_t. When they're warmed up, sometimes it sounds like popcorn cooking! As said above, they will provide a nice "patina" to the car over time. Mounting my new Avons tomorrow and I figure I will get the same or more from them. |
I got a ride in a McCluskey coupe at "their" airstrip.
All ally of course, and I don't know if it had foam or not. It sounded like you had a pot over your head and you were being pelted with sand and pebbles. :( |

I have been thinking about the Avons, but at nearly $2k for four I am struggling to see their worth. Are they really that good?
