Wilwood brakes with tandem master cylinder - need help !
Hi guys,
I want to install a new wilwood brake System in my cobra with a wilwood aluminum Tandem cylinder. Front calipers are 6piston, rear 4piston. The Tandem master cylinder has 2 Reservoirs...a small one and a large one. Q : Which is for front Brakes, which is for rear Brakes...? Thanks, Stephan |
The port closest to the firewall is for the front brakes.
Edit: I just looked at the Wilwood instructions at http://www.wilwood.com/PDF/DataSheets/ds487'.pdf and it indicates the PRIMARY port is the port furthest from the firewall, and "Connect one of the primary outlet ports (A) to the brakes at the end of the vehicle with the greatest total effective piston bore area." That's different than most dual / tandem master cylinders. When all else fails, read the manual. Wilwood documents can be downloaded from http://www.wilwood.com/Pdf/PdfIndex.aspx BTW, Wilwood primary and secondary ports appear to be different thread sizes (1/2" for primary and 9/16" for secondary) but I don't know if that applies to all MCs - best to check your specific model and if there's any doubt go straight to Wilwood for the answer. |
The larger reservoir is for the front brakes. Typically, they'll require more fluid. The front brakes exert about 70% of the braking force, so if the front piston area/rear piston area ratio isn't correct, your setup requires a pressure limiting valve on one end or the other. Production cars have setups that only require the valve on the rear system.

Wilwood has a fantastic tech support line. Call them and they'll tell you if that's the right part and how to install it. I switched from a donor master cylinder to a Wilwood dual MC and pedal box. I wasn't sure what sizes to get so I called and they told me exctactly what I needed.
