Cobra Stolen During Test Drive
On Saturday, June 6, a guy took a "Replica Shelby Cobra Valued at $100,000" for a test drive from a dealer in St. Augustine, Florida. Several miles from the dealers lot, the driver pulled a gun and told the salesman to get out .. and the driver took off with the car. The car was described as " a true replica". The authorities are "investigating". They have a photo of the car thief, 6', bald, 240 pounds, in his 50's. Must have had a covered trailer waiting. Looks like we need to have concealed carry permits to drive "replicas" these days!!

I've thought of carrying my Glock with me on drives - something about being in a wide open car I guess. Can't imagine the point in stealing one of these however - they stick out like a sore thumb. But . . . from all the posts here titled "who made my Cobra" and the like, maybe it wouldn't be all that hard to conceal one and re-sell it. :confused:

They found the car abandoned on a quiet road not too far from where it was stolen. I called the Ford dealer in St. Augustine out of curiosity to inquire as to the make of the "True Replica" and was informed that it was "totally built by Roush". So I imagine it was a Superformance car powered by a Roush motor?

I've had a retention holster attached under the dash for five years. Much more comfortable and accessible when driving with the harness on. No one has ever figured out that "Little black thing" under the dash is. :cool:

Apparently a 50 year old stole that car in the story, he might be reading about your gun now.

On a similar note, a year ago there was a Cobra stolen out of the parking lot in a town about 35 minutes drive from here. The owner had just gotten it ready for paint and was taking it out for his first drive and he stopped to get something from a parts store. When he came back outside the Cobra was gone. Several people saw some men winching it up on a rollback and the wheels were locked up and they thought it was the owner who had trouble and was having it taken home. The car was never recovered.

Who cares if they jack your cobra...just cover it with lots of insurance and then build a better one. It could be a Win/Win.
Besides the tires were old and bald, the body is cracking out and that big FE is starting to burn oil and over heat all the time. Kidding! |

I am sure that you saw the pictures and article some time back about the guy that hired thieves to take his Ferrari and cut it up for scrap so he could report it stolen and collect the insurance. Several years later after new people had moved into the house the thieves lived in some kids were playing in the back yard digging and hit metal. They got a backhoe and dug it up and it was the stolen Ferrari. Instead of destroying it, the thieves had buried it intending to dig it up later and sell it. Ron ;) |

We aren't short of losers either. Most people work very hard to acquire their goodies, and then their are swine who just take what they want. What was the point if he just left it nearby anyway!? Don |
It happens all the time, especially where I live in the LA / SoCal area.
A friend of mine's wife has been carjacked twice. Once in her BMW while literally sitting at a stoplight (car never recovered), and again with her new Range Rover while getting gas. We both tell our wives that when something like that happens, just give them the car, don't get in the car and walk away. After all, they are just cars. Now if it was me in the Cobra, I would do the same thing and just watch him drive off and tell him "good luck pal, it's all yours", then watch the news for car wrecks and/or high speed chases!;) |
Funny, I remember driving from Miami to Gainesville back in 2007 in my first cobra, and a truck pulled alongside in some heavy traffic .. and a Russian accented gent had rolled down the window and asked "is it real" .. and I immediately said "I wish it were .. but no .. this is definitely a replica ... fiberglass body, small block V8.. have a good day". Then thought .. it's time to get that concealed carry permit.
