Check out the license plate on the caddy. Aren't the British plates long and narrow?

I thinks that's Lew Spencer to Shelby's right who I believe had a British Sports Car dealership at the time.
Shelby and he partnered in High Performance Motors, the showroom/dealership in El Segundo selling Cobras in the mid '60s. Cheers Greg |
Actually, the Jag is an XK140 Coupe (had one right after High School in California- paid $750 for it in 1971).

The hood scoop on the red car looks Ferrari like. The car against the wall on the left side looks Morgan-ish.

I'm pretty sure the location is Lew Spenser's British Car service/dealership in 1961 in LA California.
Lew Spencer (standing to Shelby's right) was the Morgan West Coast distributor/dealer in the early 60's, a friend and fellow racer of Shelby's. He raced a blue '61 Morgan called the Baby Doll Special. That Morgan in the background was probably a '61. If the woman is Joan Sherman, the time period would be late 1961 or early 1962, perhaps just months or weeks before the Feb '62 first Cobra build at Dean Moon's shop. Now the cars in the corner of the garage hiding behind the Cadillac. Keep in mind Shelby had bee a race driver for Lucky Casner's Team Camoradi racing team driving Type 60 and Type 61 Birdcage Maseratis in 1960 and 1961. Cars were raced predominenily in white but also in red. After winning the 1961 National Championship, Shelby, uum, "stored" the cars somewhere because he wanted them. They were later "unstored" by Maserati. We're seeing two cars in the corner behind the Caddy. Just a thought, I wonder if the red car in the corner may be a Allard J2X ? The reason I say that is my Uncle Dick was a racer and friend of Lew, and worked on his car there once in while between races. To me it look's like the hood with the port holes of a Allard and how high that car sits, compared to the Maser next to it.

Allard had scoops like that too I believe, though not enough detail for me and I can't get the computer to let me look closer at it without it sliding off the screen!
I bet that caddy has a hitch on it and was used to pull cobras to the track. Probably just shipped over with the team cars. |
I found a photo online of Lew Spencer and Eric Dahlquist in front of Carroll Shelby’s & Lew Spencer - High Performance Motors with Dragonsnake CSX2356 (dated October 1964) and could not help noticing the siding on the buildings looked the same. And if you look in the windows I see a similar garage door configuration at the back of the building too. Perhaps someone can post it here. Is on the “just a car guy” website.

The guy in the blue shirt with his hands in his pockets is John Edgar. Which would explain the red Ferrari in the background with an "8" on it.

I'm thinking a Ferrari because of color (Red), what appears to be the #_8 on the car, and Edgar in the photo who ran that number on a red Ferrari.
As per the white Maserati being a Tipo 60 or 61, I look at the side exhaust (or lack of it), the door outline and what could be the black outline of welting between a fender and the body of the car which the Tipo 60 and 61 did not have to my knowledge. (All one piece body/fender sections) All purely speculation on my part with out a better photo.... but definitely Superman dressed in white. Woman perhaps Louis Lane? And hole in wall in backgrounf where Superman entered..... Also, Lew's racing Morgan had wire wheels and no front bumpers in all the photos I find.... What year is the caddy? 1950’s something I think. Blas |
