MSD Digital 6AL pn 6425
I originally posted this thread in the Engine Building/Ignition page, but didn't get any response. I'm hoping someone that knows about this issue will see it here. I replaced my old 6AL pn 6420. When I started up the Cobra after the winter this year, it was running real rough, decreased power, but not breaking up. Wouldn't want to take it out on the road. Tapped on the MSD box a few times and then it was running just fine. I replaced the box with a new Digital 6AL and now my Lucas ammeter fluctuates between 0 and +25A when the motor revs up. It's stable at idle. I'm guessing the new box is messing with the voltage regulator. A buddy said it's a known issue, but I couldn't find anything googling the issue. I called MSD and the guy said that the Digital 6AL draws a lot of power, live with it.

There is an ammeter / voltmeter fix for superformance cars. Something about the ammeter sense wire being in the wrong place that causes needle bounce and battery overcharging. Here is some detail but more can be found at the SCOF site with videos to diagnose the condition as well as how the wiring should be.

Thanks Steve-O. The problem didn't exist with the old analog 6AL, pn 6420. I called MSD again, this guy also mentioned that the Digital 6AL draws a lot of power. He said that it should be powered directly to the battery. Not really convenient when the battery is in the trunk. But the pos is wired right with the pos battery cable at the solenoid. The neg wire is grounded on the cowl hoop where the old one was. I could wire the neg right to the engine block. I'm not sure, but I'm guessing that's where the neg cable from the battery goes.
