Cobra Valve Covers
I'd really like to put some classic Cobra valve covers on my engine (black crinkel with polished ribbing and Cobra on the top). All I can find are the standard height covers and they all say either, doesn't fit roller rockers or may need some modification. Does anyone know how much more room is needed, what the modification is or has anyone experienced this and what did you do to mae em work??
Any suggest greatly appreciated.

You can modify the baffles around the oil filler tube and the pcv valve to get roller rockers to fit, that's usually the only bad interference. Also you can get some extra thick valve cover gaskets to raise up the cover slightly, felcro makes some really thick cork gaskets, I think they are FelPro #1645. Just a little extra bit of height is needed, at least that is my experience with crane gold race roller rocker arms on 289 HiPo engines.

Page 48 has the look in tall style but I've also found if they're cleaned up inside and a thick or two cover gaskets work.

Small block or big block engine?????
Small block is no problem,take the baffles out and trim them slightly,then bend them upwards to the top of the valve cover and they will clear most any roller rocker..........I've done this on 3 or 4 engines all with different roller rockers with no problems.....

Valve Cover Spacers
To give you plenty of added height (1-3/8”) without modifying the VCs, these spacers are an option. A bit pricier than just modifying existing covers, and an extra set of gaskets is required, but you will be assured of having enough space, and leaves the VCs untouched should you decide to change later and want to sell them without being modified. But, make sure the added height won't cause interference problems elsewhere. Available at many places, here is just an example.

Seems to me the aftermarket would have responded to this by now...as common as roller rockers are and the number of guys like me that like the classic look....

I always used just the Fel Pro 1645 gaskets which gave me enough clearance without having to do anything with the baffles. That was several years ago and the parts number may have changed by now, but I ran my car hard and it never touched the baffles at all. And I just used the regular black crinkle finished covers with Cobra in the center of them.

Ok, thanks to everyone for the info. I'm going with SunDude's suggestion but now I've discoveded another issue. I'd like to get an oval Cobra air cleaner to match the valve covers but the 21 inch ones will not clear. Does anyone know if someone offers a 15 or maybe 17 inch ovals in black with the polished ridges and Cobra on them??

Hi, have a similar request regarding this style valve cover for a 302 EFI. Can any shed some light on whats out available & any mods needed? All info much appreciated. Thank you, Nick |

Nick,
The 302 valve covers should be the same as those for a 351. But look at what they have on the site for them. Some will say not for use with fuel injection. I think it has to do with where your fuel logs are located.

Many head manufacturers now have a built in raised/taller valve cover mounting rail to accommodate the extra clearance required for roller valve trains and allow for unmodified valve covers.
Greg & Nick, You may want to check your heads to see if they were made with this taller rail. You may be good to go already. |

Hi Ron, It's the clearance with the EFI Manifolds. Have to stay low. Your right they say not for use with EFI. Some are designated for EFI. Thought some one may have gone down that road and could make a recommendation. They also say mods may be needed for roller set ups. Thanks, Nick |
