Really glad you're ok...enjoy our backyard (Yosemite).
Kirkhams use nylocs on just about everything, and double return springs should be used at both locations. While those are bolts I check regularly as part of regular maintenance (while I'm also checking steering shaft connections/bolts...another breeding ground for "oh sh!t" moments), they've never become loose enough to tighten even a little in over 12 years. Welding's obviously good, but the extra PITA it takes using nylocs everywhere on this tin can does add to the piece of mind. Touching every damn nut/bolt with a wrench 3-4 times a year and before every track session is nice therapy. I treat this damn thing like I do my guns. |
If it was me that happened to, this is the thought I would have:
Trying to slam the door on a lane changer + throttle sticking open almost crashing = karma Best to remember anytime you go WOT you're tempting fate. Do it where things are in your favor. |
I've had the experience of a stuck throttle, and it will pucker your sphincter in a hurry!
Mine happened while leaving home, about half way down our short cul-de-sac. I had about 100 yards before hitting a T-intersection and having to either stop or turn one way or another. There was precious little time to think fast, shut it off and get it stopped. Not fun. The only saving grace was it was part throttle, not WOT. The entire throttle assembly has now been replaced - from pedal to carburetor connection. |

Yup, my pedal is stop-ready, just no stop installed! mickmate, I hope you don't mind if I take you up on your offer?! patrickt, My linkage bracket that's mounted on the block is welded like yours but the one on the footbox is like the pic below... Jamo, It does have a nyloc! I guess it simply wasn't tight enough. keezling, I did have an immediate karma refection, "This is what I get". But the guy was right on my ass! There was probably more danger in the tailgaiting than the stuck throttle because... The throttle was stuck but I never said it was WOT. Goosing it enough to stop a BMW's pass is not a WOT move. I'm convinced that the linkage was tight, then slipped, then 'caught' again, to settle with the linkage at 3 o'clock. The throttle stops you sent were great except for one thing, I just found out that I need an M8, not a 5/16-18!! All was good for one turn **) So, the 2 stops are shipping back to ACE on Monday. I really appreciate the generosity. FYI, my Shelby is from HiTech, SA. Upon further inspection (flashlight...:LOL:), I saw that my Kirkham had one. Why did I ever doubt them? Look for them in mail, take note of the M8 for new Shelby's, and check the mail for the stops. Thank you! PS: I did this on the forum so people can take note not to force a 5/16-18 if it doesn't feel right. PPS: The piece of linkage in question was welded at the bottom but the tightening broke it loose. |
Second and third springs added
rodneym When we ran the Run and Gun a safety thing was 3 springs on the linkage. You where allowed the one on the carb but 2 where needed on the linkage. Maybe you might want to look into this. Problems like this happen again over time. Down side is your right foot gets a little more workout. Gald you and the car where not damaged. Underwear is a washing thing or throwout. :eek::rolleyes:;) Rick L.

I had a throttle stick open one time
I had a parachute fail to open one time They both happened at the same time==========odds of that happening with my system??? This happened in my pro stock racer-typical times in 1/4 mile were 7 seconds and near 180 mph----the chute fell onto cross bar of the wheelie bars and sat there, at the higher speeds then the hood had flexed down into linkage--by the time I got things under control estimating speed was probably over 200mph as the chrome blew off from aromd windshield and various other things that I had never seen before. Luckily I was at Btron Drag strip and there was a very long extended service road that runs further south toward the twin towers at the nuclear power plant and I bounced along for quite a ways before I got stopped |
