What are you using to seal fuel fittings and brake line fittings
While replacing the entire fuel system and upgrading the brake lines to braided hoses I need to make sure I am using the correct thread sealant. Given that we are dealing with fuel and brake fluid I didn't think traditional thread tape would hold up for the long term. What do you guys use and is it something similar to a Permatex product that can be picked up at the local parts store?

To clarify what information ACE23 is seeking, we are replacing the rubber brake lines with stainless. Do you use a thread sealer or possibly an anti-seize thread lubricant on the npt fittings at the brake caliper? If so what type? The other fittings in question are npt's that are on each end of the fuel filter. I suggested calling Olthoff as I've read posts with similar requests that leave you scratching your head!!

Actually: no sealant on the threads! Just new copper washers, if applicable.
But let somebody look at matching the line ends to the corresponding (in)side on the brakes.
And make also sure you are not mistakingly threading 3/8" into M10x1 threads (unlikely in the US). The seem to fit, but will never hold.

I have used anti-seize on threads that are not sealing. All you need is a really small amount on the thread.
You do not need thread tape or anything of that nature. If it leaks, you have another problem you need to fix.

I see what you mean about the confusion. The first two responses are not correct for sealing npt. first, I question the use of npt for automotive brake and fuel systems, however, if you must, all npt threads must be sealed. the sealer itself will tell you what it is compatible with. Teflon tape is compatible with brake fluid and gasoline, but be very careful to not get it in the lines. make sure you have no tape overlapping the fitting threads. |

On the NP threads I use Teflon tape for both fuel and brake fluid. It is important to keep the tape away from the first thread on the fitting so as to not get any loose tape fragments into the fluid lines. The threads on the flare nuts, whether standard flare or inverted flare, need no sealant as the flare provides the seal. I have had good success using this practice for many years on various fluid systems, both high and low pressure.

Hot rod type brake caliper washers have a rubber seal on them. Common for general PBR, Baer and SAI type calipers to leak. (weep) Use these rubber laden washers to seal larger drips before you tighten too much.

I have had very good results using LOCTITE 290 in threaded applications.
