Anybody's 347 sound like this?
http://youtu.be/RRBbjOSID_s
I know it's a 427 BB of course, but can a 347 be configured to sound like this? If so what spec please, for example: Cam? Compression? Heads? Valve size? Carb size or EFI? Anything else? Many Thanks! |
Yes
mine was EFI 195 Brodix heads CNC by Keith Craft 80 mm Victor intake 90 mm mass air 80 mm throttle body Comp cam 35-518-8 2.02 valve .555/.565 lift but with the 1.7 Scorpion roller rockers = .590/.595 lift 274/282 224/232 with a 112 lobe separation EEIV processor with SCT chip, Ford distributor 10.67 compression 1 5/8 equal length header with 3" Classic Cobra Pack side pipes. 402 rear wheel hp and 422 rwtq 350 rwtq at 2300 rpms |
Thanks for that Dwight.
Is this the motor you said got 20 mpg? I've been looking at Keith Crafts Street and Street Perfomance 347, both carbed. Do you think they'd sound similar? |
You can reproduce the lope from engine to engine, as it's a function of the camshaft. You can also reproduce how *hard* an engine hits as it's a function of exhaust and compression ratio.
However, you can't reproduce the same tone because a big inch motor sounds completely different than a small inch motor. A 347 and a 427 are 80 cubic inches apart and you can tell the difference from that. |
Can the BB ignition firing order be replicated with the 347? Seems I remember one of the SB series was wired the same as an FE, but I forget which one - Windsor, Cleveland or both?
Apparently Patrick, with his tuning fork trained ear lobes can readily distinguish between them.%/ |
OLD 289/302's had a 15426378 order, which is the same as an FE. However, the sheer size (both physically and displacement-wise) will add to the sound.

yes 20 mpg
people would asked "is that a 427?" and I would asked "what do you think?" they always said "yes" Dwight |

My 393 sounds a lot like that but doesn't have the very low end grumble. It sounds awful sweet to me as it's winding through the gears.
Besides the specs as described above, I think picking the right side pipes goes a long way to getting the sound you want. Our club has a large mix of different Cobras and they all sound different. Some of the big blocks are some of the quietest of the bunch, mostly because of the pipes, IMHO. Bob |

PS, I did the same thing when I had a 302 in my FFR. |

Sounds like the idle speed is too low to me.....
They all will "Dairy Queen" like that if they're idling at 700 rpm....LOL |

Would sound much better picked up by 200 rpm. |
Cubic Inch, Camshaft, Compression, Idle Speed, and Timing will all affect the sound of the engine. Getting that sound is not an issue. We use custom grind camshafts on all engines, the specs vary depending on car specs, application and desired idle characteristics.

This engine is a 498 CID FE and I think it has more of a small block sound. Specs are 15 to 1, cam is 287 in and 297 ex @.050 with .800" lift, Ported Blue Thunder heads, modded Victor Jr. intake, 1650 cfm Wilson throttle body (with secondaries wired shut because of wheel spin), Fast EFI, 65 lb injectors, Carrillo rods, Moldex crank, Dailey Dry sump, Shelby Aluminum Block, MSD with crank fire chipped at 8200.
