Trunk lift
I want to swap out the stock mechanical trunk lift bracket for something better. Maybe a gas shock. Has anyone used a gas shock and can recommend which to use? I'm thinking it may be better to use one on each side to minimize the chance of stressing the fiberglass.

I have been thinking about it. I did it for my hood and it worked out great! I'm going to try to hide mine so the shocks will not be visible.

I have repaired three trunk lids from gas Springs damage.
All of them had the spring pressure on the trunk when it was closed Too much Pressure trying to open the lid when it was closed One had two springs on it and it actually cracked the deck lid And one ripped the latch out of the inner panel so be careful you want a spring with just enough power to lift the deck lid and make sure it's set up with the lid is close there was no pressure on it. Google gas springs and you can find a diagram how to set them up ( mounting points) Tom |
I use a single gas strut mounted on the driver's side. Got it from: McMaster-Carr
You need to go as low pressure as you can. I've forgotten what I went with but it took a couple of iterations to get it right. Tim |

Just out of curiosity, what's the problem with the mechanical lift bracket? They work well - at least mine does, a little grease on the ratchet mechanism once a year and it will probably last indefinitely and they don't stress the fiberglass when closed. Gas struts tend to weaken over time... Just trying to understand the attraction to changing this.

Take a look at the lid mounted bracket. The shape allows the strut to apply no upward pressure to the fiberglass lid. |
I like the gas strut. I started of with the catch type, until someone came along and tried to shut the boot without releasing the catch. Almost cracked the lid. I've now fitted it to the bonnet and I hate having to go around the other side to release the catch or fiddling with the catch having to lift the bonnet press the catch then drop it. I have heard that someone who re-gasses these lifts can adjust it to any pressure you need. So I'll be looking to replace it soon. The boot is so light you only need a very weak strut to hold it up so when it's closed there isn't much force on the brackets. I've made up a slightly longer bracket on the lid itself to spread the load.

Reviving an old thread. I replaced my Backdraft’s mechanical strut with a Monroe Maxlift gaslift. It fits perfectly and I reduced the pressure with the grub screw to just enough to hold the bootlid up...
