Shelby's personal BOSS 302 Cobra ??
Someone told me that Shelby put a BOSS 302 in his personal 289 Cobra.
The BOSS 302 was only made in 1969 and 1970 so he could have only done it in 1969 or later. Does anyone know if their is any truth to this "rumor." Thanks to all you Cobra history buffs! |
A Boss 302 won't fit into a standard 289 engine bay without modifications to fit the larger heads. But Shelby did put a 351 Windsor into CSX 2589.

Perhaps the Boss 302 would not fit in an original 289 Cobra, but Shelby has certainly owned several completion and continuation Cobras. I sort of recall him mention in a video that he had just built a small block Cobra with an automatic transmission for his personal use. I assumed that was a CSX7000 or CSX8000. I wonder if a Boss 302 would fit in one of those.

Late CSX cars are essentially the same dimension as the original, so the Boss wouldn't fit new either. Shelby owned one original leaf spring that was one of the automatic trans cars produced. CSX2589 I think but don't quote me. I don't know about any Cobra 427's.

I assume we are talking about the old Boss 302 that was the test bed and precursor for the Cleveland. The old Boss was only built in '68 and '69.
The new Boss is a completely different engine obviously... |

The BOSS 302 was only made in 1969 and 1970 in Ford's effort to beat the Z-28
Camero in the Trans-am Series. The blocks were a special iron alloy block with 4 bolt mains and screw-in freeze plugs. The heads were what later became the 351 Cleveland head. It was a 7000-9000 RPM race engine with large ports and valves which suffered in the midrange where the fuel velocity dropped off. I have a vintage 1970 Boss in my ERA and it fits easily. The only concession was a custom header set up for the heads. |

Boss 302? or 351C
I also seem to remember Shelby had Mike McCluskey install a 351c in his 289 Cobra. I had an old magazine that showed the Cobra with the 351, not sure if it was a Boss 351 or just a 351C. The magazine was printed in the 70s. I do believe it also had an auto. The magazine was published by Peterson Magazines? I think. It was a long time ago.

That is what one of my Cobra books says also and it has a picture of the car with the engine in it.

Ford put the 351C engine in the Pantera so it would seem reasonable for them to just send one over to Shelby to stick in his 289 as it would have been the high output Ford small block of the day. |
