Project wheel restoration

I picked up this set of old wheels from a good friend;)
After kicking them around the shop floor for many months I decided to spend a little time on them, well more than a little time:eek: Finished cleaning up the fronts, I would still like to spin them in the lathe one more time. Now I'm trying to decide on the finish I want on the centers, and I guess keeping a nice finish on the outer edges is go to be an on going endeavor:rolleyes: At this stage I'm leaning towards black or gray centers:confused: |

Are those magnesium ? I just "blinged-up' my wheels, painted the centers a light gold (as per csx3259) to simulate the gold anodizing or alodining that was common "back in the day" . Not sure I like it. My next attempt would be the "raw" mag look, like yours have now, with maybe a protective gold alodine treatment. Clear alodine leaves just a hint of gold . Ted |

Just had a thought, you should alodine the bare metal before prime & paint anyway, If you don't like it, just paint over it.

All good suggestions Ted, I like the gold centers but it really depends on the color of the car for me.
I finished up the repairs on the rear wheels, I think I will wait and decide on the cars color first before painting the centers.**) |

Personally I like the brushed/machined look of the outers and if anything would have a grey in the centre, something with nil or low gloss.
I like what Bob has done with the wheels at vintage wheels when he has bead blasted the outers with no coating, so as time goes on they have a nice aged look to them. It would be interesting to see some before pics if there has been some good work to restore. |

I have lost a file with my before pictures,:mad:
I did find this one I must have snapped sometime on a different device, These wheels had been beaten up pretty bad, in fact the worse I have seen. It looked like someone had a hard time with getting spinners off and used some sort of steel hammer or ?? Big dents, and gouged all over the outer rims. The rears looked like they brushed the curbs a little as well.:eek: This wheel was bad but not the worst,:( All good now, happy we were able to save them.:D |
Great work as usual. It looks like you are just a short polish from finishing on the lips. Personally, I really like the bead blasted look on the centers with possibly just a seal coat to keep them from showing corrosion too soon. Nothing wrong with a powder coat black or other color on the centers, though.
I did see a set like those with red powdercoat on the centers on a red car. Still haven't decided if I liked it or not..... :) Bob |
Spray Eagle One Mag wheel cleaner in the center, then re polish the outer... gives a nice natural finish.. OR, paint the center something in a grey. What ever you do , I know it will be perfect
