Unfinished Willment Cobra
Seems like a big ask to me, but I'm not an expert. What do you guys think?Period British Copy w/ Holman Moody VIN: 1965 Willment Cobra Coupe | Bring a Trailer
|
Interesting! Hollman Moody is/was an American racing team but Willment was a British team. This car has some aspects similar to the Willment Coupe and some not at all, like the nose for instance.
Not sure what to think at this point. This chassis appears to be a 4" main frame with coil over suspension like the 427 Cobra. It also looks new though. There's an interesting paragraph at the end of this article about the Willment Coupe, though there's some incorrect info in other parts of it. 1964 Willment Daytona Coupe CSX2131 – Shelby American Collection Larry |
I can remember watching it, and the Willment Cobra and the 427 Gallaxy racing at Killarney in Cape Town at various times in the 60's, might even have some old photos of them lying somewhere. Aahh the memories - they had a big impact on generating my love of American V8s.

Hmmm, the intrigue gets more so.... I have several pics, all taken late 80's/early 90's at HM where there appears to be actually three coupe bodies and perhaps two chassis, one being the complete red car with flip front parting line below headlights/above driving lights. The other two look like they are/have been trial fitted to a 4" coil over chassis. One of these two bodies looks like the one posted on BAT being blue and the other appears to be alloy like the one in the Shelby museum at Boulder.
Both these would appear to hinge the Flip Front like most coupes with the front apron integral to the flip front. You will have to take my word for this as the pics are private from a friend who worked there. Perhaps this solves the mystery of where the 'so called' second big block coupe mentioned in 'Shelbys Wildlife' finished up. BTW both blue/alloy body on chassis have the same FE engine which suggests there was only the one chassis. The red car with non conventional flip front is SBF powered. |
Interesting, might be better for the owner to finish then sell?
If the story is correct and can get traction it may be worth it... Lots of work though.......... :p |
A chassis with no AC Cars or Ford VIN, but one with a "Holman Moody" VIN that fits the narrative of the seller. He confuses the Willment 289 coupe with the later 427 "Super Coupe," which Willment had nothing to do with. This car has a replica fiberglass body mounted on a coil-spring chassis and uses a VIN "HM-427-2." As if there was a first one? No provenance here that is discernible.
