1955 LeMans WOW!

06/11/1955.

81 Spectators and 1 driver killed at the LeMans race. Good Lord!

Wouldn't our LAW yers have a field day.

You didn't know that ??

I'd heard about a nasty crash, but never read the specifics. Just happened to see a note that today is the anniversary.

6/11/1967 win at Le Mans with Dan Gurney and A. J. Foyt in Mk IV J-6 for a brighter side.

As an Austin-Healey guy, I'm very familiar with the LeMans accident. This is a good documentary on the subject:

Very bad for the spectators but it was just an all around dangerous sport back then. It was almost certain if you were a race car driver that they would be seriously injured in an accident and there was a very good chance they would die in it. Old Shelby raced during some of the most dangerous years. He was and we are very lucky he survived and got out when he did so he could develope the Cobra.

Mercedes quit racing because of that accident
