Hey all, I am trying to get some more info on this motor. I am helping a friend sort through and sell some stuff. When I got the green light to sell this motor, I realized I really know very little about it, aside from it being a cobra 427 crate motor. It was her husbands, who unfortunately passed away a few years ago. He planned to put it in a fast back. That's about as much as I know. I figured this would be the place to ask. Any info would be really appreciated. Once I figure out how to post some pics, I'll let them do the talking for me. ive been reading up on the Shelby story and the cobra has a very interesting history to it, as does the 427 motor. Ultimately, a fair price would be good to know, but anything about it I'd be interested to learn.

I do not believe that the engine in those pictures is a 427. It is an FE, maybe 428 or 390, but not a 427.

Cberr: It's not a 427 side oiler, no left side oil galley, no screw-in freeze plugs, and no main bearing cross-bolts. Could be a 390 block bored & stroked to ??? cu. in.Hard telling what it is without some disassembly and measuring bore and stroke and finding some casting #'s. The "427" valve covers will fit any FE eng, 390-428.

That's right, it's an FE but not a 427. Unfortunately the 390s and 428s are much less valuable.

352 or a 390, has 1961 heads, a measurement of the bore and the stroke is the only way to tell what it really is

Sounds like the guys have it nailed down pretty well already.. Pop the heads and measure the bore and stroke.. It may well be a 390 block punched out and stroked to 427 or 428 or ???

Danr, it very well could be....but i kinda think by the looks of certain things, its going to be basically stock inside, might be a warm cam.

Looking at the slightly newer blue paint on the timing cover, that could be the case. |
It could be a 427. I've seen pics of two industrial 427 motors. Neither one was cross-bolted.

Thanks for all the info. I knew I came to the right place. :) didn't even think of that...just cause the valve covers say 427 don't mean it is...
When I get a chance to investigate, aside from pulling the heads, anything to look for on the motor that would be a good indicator? I'll try to get some better close up shots to add to the photos. By the way, is it cool to do the pics that way? I tried a few times to add pics to the post but couldn't figure it out. So figured I'd just make a google photos album and post the link.

Check for the casting number on the block, the oil galley, and every 427 I've ever seen has screw in freeze plugs.. This one has press in freeze plugs..

The 427 in my car has press in freeze plugs. I can't say about latter engines ,but the early ones came both ways

Like the guys have already said it is missing side bolts which means that of all the FE 427's that people would want to own this is absolutely not one. Fred's suggestion that it is something like a 390 with 427 valve covers and a rattle can paint job might be optimistic then again it might not.
My bet is that you have a basically stock passenger car engine that will likely turn out to be a 390. Check out the block identification links that spdbrake provided to you and you might get lucky and be able to identify it without disassembly.
