Issue with hood prop rod falling out in windy conditions
hello, fellow cobra owners!
I have had my hood nearly slam closed during a car show on windy days on two occasions. I was there both times, and caught it, but when open it is nearly 90 degrees and it would surely be a disaster if it fell. I have devised a part which I keep in my glove box which blocks the slot in the SS bracket. I would think that this would fit any ERA car, 289, or 427 models. I just don't know how often this happens to people. I could use feedback. The part is aluminum and I made it in two halves on an EDM machine. Thanks Don |
There are two types of hood props on the 427: The early prop pivoted on the hood and locked into a box on the wheel-well.
The later style (also on the FIA) had the prop pivot from near the firewall and fit into a T-slot on the hood. Which do you have? If the latter, if you put a little more (or less) bend in the prop, it will "stick" into the slot to prevent the sort of problem that you describe. |
There was a member here with a yellow Cobra who posted a photo of what he did (long ago). He used an O-ring as a tie-down for his hood prop rod. Added a small knurled knob to the fiberglass hood just above the hole and secured the O-ring to the rod. Then the hood was open he just looped the O-ring over the knob. it was ingenious......

Friend of mine uses a tip that mounts to a small ball attached to the hinge itself. Requires pulling the slip lock as I call it.

I have the version with the hinged prop rod on the hood. there is a subtle bayonet slot in the box on the wheel well, but it isn't too deep. I will try what you have suggested. Thanks, again. Don |
