Windshield crack repair
Installed sun visors yesterday and on one screw attachment point noticed a small crack about 1" long running vertically from the top of the windshield. I have watched where repairs making a small drill depression (3/16") to terminate the crack and then use a resin repair kit to fill the crack has worked successfully. Has anyone attempted such a repair on their cracked windshield?

Not on a crack that long but mine was more out in the windshield. If you car doesn't do a lot of vibrating and shaking of the windshield, that might work in that area as it should be a low stress area. What started the crack? Some people have had screws that were a little to long and they went through into the glass.

Thanks Ron, used the small screws that came with the visor kit and it only happened on the first one. The other three attaching screws snugged up fine, I even used locktite so I would not have to run the risk of over tightening. I am seriously considering drilling a small depression to terminate the crack and use a repair kit resin to fix the damage. I agree with you that because of the location it appears to be a low stress area and could allow for this kind of repair.

Thanks Fred B, you made me think twice about what I wanted to do. Glass Clinic seems to be in a lot of the cities in the Dallas area. I have requested a call back from them to see what they can do for me. Have you had experience using them in the past?

I have unfortunately had crack repairs done many times on my daily drivers (in Phoenix you are lucky if you can go two years without a cracked windshield). Tried the do it yourself approach once and it did not work. Professional repairs have always worked. Had one done in my Cobra too. Don't try to do it yourself - the pros have the equipment to inject the resin in under high pressure. They come to your house or work and it takes about 15 min's.

12 years and no cracking, the windshield is 30 plus years old will probably be replaced next year due to age and De-lamination. |
