Cobra weber fuel system
As I now start to (finally) address finishing my CR1, its time to finalize the drivetrain system.
I have been rethinking my motor configuration. I have a '90 5.0 HO that came with the unfinished car. It has the standard EFI system on it. I have a new set of TFS twisted wedge heads with a stage 2 porting and the upgraded springs, pushrod guides and ARP head bolts. I also have a Kenne Bell supercharger system with a extrude honed lower intake. The car will be used for just cruising, too old to be auto-crossing or racing any more. With that laid out, I came across a complete Weber system for a reasonable price. I have always loved the sound and looks of the webers on a SBF! I know they are much more difficult to set up and keep tuned. But what a sweet sound! I know I am asking for a serious debate to start here with this posting, but what better forum to get some feedback on those that have been down this road before. http://www.clubcobra.com/forums/pict...=17885&thumb=1 http://www.clubcobra.com/forums/pict...=17886&thumb=1 |
Is it weber carbs or a fuel injection system?
|
Exactly! I know there are some Weber/efi style systems out there. But I am looking at true webers. Or use the Kenne Bell system. The last choice would be to simply upgrade the existing EFI system.
|
Any of the three choices would be good for what you want. The webbers would give you that look if you want to enter it in any car shows but would most likely use more fuel. The supercharger would maybe give you more power also and should be easy to keep going once you have it set up. The fuel injection is good and that is what I use on my car as it isn't affected by altitude like carbs are..

I have been down that road and still on it. My opinion is the only benefit the webers will give you over your current set-up is appearance. I hear many people say they like the way webers sound, my hearing must suck because I can not hear anything different over the exhaust or the wind from open cockpit.
Tuning can be quite extensive unless you just get lucky, 4 jets/bleeds per throat, 8 emulsion tubes, 4 accelerator bleeds. Average cost for each, $8 Linkage setup is very critical, I found that cross-bar style as your photo shows to be inaccurate. However, once the carbs are set, there should be no further adjustments, they operate like any other carburetor. |
The webers can be the devil to get right if not correct when yiou buy them. I had them on my car when I bought it but the engine had the wrong cam for them and we did not have the expertise to get them right. I ran out of time or I might have sent them to Jim Englese to set them up for my engine. If it were fall and I was not critical on time I'd send them to him.
They have unsurpassed visual presence. |
Jim Inglese is finishing up my Webber setup. You need to know what cam you currently have and what the lobe separation angle is. Webber's require very specific cams to work properly so prior to installing the Webbers make sure that it will work correctly. You have to consider the whole package to minimize headaches down the road. Good luck.

Thanks for all the feedback. I think I will stay with the Kenne Bell supercharger. It seem more tunable and the added power doesn't hurt!

Wil, when I bought this car, four years ago, it had Webers on it. I'm pretty much deaf in one ear, and can't hear out of the other so I've never heard the sweet "Weber Song" they make at WOT. BUT, I sure do like the looks and the response from car-gazers. The Huffer will surely give you more HP, and fewer tuning issues, but it won't give you that smile whenever you open the hood.
Remember, the car doesn't care and it will kill you, if you screw up. Just my 2¢ worth. |
As others have said, the right cam will make all the difference. You want to be between 112-115 for Webers and yes Jim Igliese is the man to do it right. I think he has moved to FL from CT last time I checked. Good guy and will make a great setup that will run.
Yes they are not great on fuel but hell it’s a Cobra not a Prius. Go Webers all the way. |
Looking close, I see electrical connections in the center of the manifold, the system might be a FI/weber conversation. The real expense if it is, is the ECM to control it.

After closer inspection, I was concerned the offer was not "real". So I backed out making an offer. Pisses me off when these scammers place these ads!
|
Was it too good a deal?
|
Reasonable, but not a "steal". He had not listed before on ebay.
