Back to the Hans Hermann picture: what was that swivel chair doing on the side
of the road by his airborne car? Just curious. |
Good question.
Looking back on it, my first thought was that it was a wishbone and part of the wheel. But nope. It's in the runoff area (he's not taken the corner and has gone through the hay bales), so maybe it's a photographer's chair or some other bit of near-trackside hardware. They weren't fussy about potential 'targets' back then. Something to rest a camera on....? |
Got more....saw this one recently. Not an old picture like the rest, but at least it's an old car, a Bugatti Type 13. Lucky for some....
http://www.clubcobra.com/photopost/d...ti_crash_1.jpg ....and then..... http://www.clubcobra.com/photopost/d...ti_crash_2.jpg Almost unbelievably, he walked away. Here's cheers to the driver!! Glen |
He might have walked away, but I bet you he left a few marbles there alongside that embakement **)
|
I would say he's got big marbles....:D
|
Hard to believe he walked away!
|
Back to the original picture.... this is Maurice Trintignant in CooperMaserati T51 Grand Prix enroute to (or possibly from) Riverside International Raceway around 20 November 1960
|
Cool!
|
In the first picture with Maurice Trintignant, it is clear that Nothing has changed when it comes to traffic. Some A-Hole putting along in the Left Hand Lane will cause traffic headaches for everyone!

Here's one that I remember seeing 'live' on TV, well before I was old enough to do the 1500 mile / 2500km round trip to Bathurst (NSW, Australia).
It really IS a 'walk away' crash! It's Bill Brown in a Ford Falcon GTHO Phase III : http://www.clubcobra.com/photopost/d...hurst_1969.jpg This is what an article in carsguide said: "Bill walked away (literally) from the accident, and refused to lie on the stretcher for medical attention in the moments after the accident. Bill’s survival has been attributed to the back rest of the seat breaking during the crash meaning that as the car’s roof was being crushed, Bill was actually horizontal and avoided what would have surely been a life ending impact." Cheers to Bill! Glen |
OK, here's another....this one I also remember seeing live on TV as well. It’s Martin Brundle in the inaugural Melbourne GP (after 11 wonderful years in Adelaide). It’s described somewhere as the worst F1 crash in which the driver survived.
http://www.clubcobra.com/photopost/d..._Mel_19961.jpg Brundle certainly did survive, “returning to the pit lane to argue his way into his spare car for the restart of the race, which was red-flagged in the wake of his car-destroying aerial acrobatics.” (from SMH) Here it is on youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mQjXkfqYWoo Anyone got any other spectacular “walk away” crashes? Cheers, Glen |
Don't know what caused it but the B looks a little deflated at the rear end....
