Side pipe and headers
I posted this yesterday but I guess it didn't make it to the Forum ... I have an '04 Backdraft Racing. The sidepipes are the "slip-on" type that go over the headers and are held together with springs. They rattle and leak so I'm considering replacing them but that's very expensive. Also looked at having flanges welded but I don't know how that would work with the headers being ceramic coated and the pipes being stainless. I believe the steering assembly will have to be removed too. I would hope the headers can be removed without lifting the engine.... Anyone that has done this change or has info I'd sure appreciate your input.

Yes you can drop the header out from below on the left side. Topside on right.
For re-assy you can use Remflex 3003 header gaskets. Before I replaced everything, I would remove the side pipes and the reassemble them with exhaust sealant. It hardens with temperature and should eliminate your rattles.
If it doesn’t work you haven’t lost anything since you are thinking about replacing everything. |
I have had good luck with an exhaust expander tool. Enlarge the smaller pipe to make a tighter fit.
OK I could not get a link to work. Go to Summit and search for OEM Specialty Tools 25327 - OEM Automotive Tools Tailpipe Expanders or exhaust expanders. $22 to $55 will buy you a good one. Check your local parts stores also. |
