Cobra, Shelby, Tiger and Ferrrari...We had our priorities right!
Just mooching around on this great Club Cobra resource, and found this....

Nice - is it my imagination or does the Cobra have a lower and more slanting window thatn normal?

Interesting that the Tiger is 1964+ vintage, the Ferrari 330GT Mk I is 1963+ vintage (or 1965+ for 330GT Mk II) and the GT350 is 1965+ vintage ....and yet the Cobra 427, with close roots back to the AC Ace of 1953, is (arguably) the best looking car there.

Glen, I didn't think you'll get much of a argument about which one is the best looking "Sports Car" here :). And Yes I believe a GT-350 is a sports car. But not the best picture for the Tiger, or the (I believe) a 65 330 Mk.1, if we could see the nose. The Tiger would look a little more "mean" if it had it's top down, and a set of mag's (To fill out the fender well's ). Stock hub cap's are such a rare piece now. This could be our house back in the 60's, my Father's Volvo P-1800, a couple 911's, 356's, a Tiger or two, Healey 3000, 100S. Everyone used to come to our house, we lived on the other side of the water from Seattle and had "Sports Car roads". My Father had a once a year campout, they all used to camp in "Tents" remember those ;) In our back yard, you never knew what would show up, a Ferrari, next to a Saab, or a 911 next to a Morgan etc. Being a young man 10-15years old, and in love with Sports Cars, I was in heaven. Since my dad worked at Studebakers we lived out in the country near south bend. The most exciting car I saw around there was my Uncle Glen's Stude speedster.
When I was about 11 we moved to Greencastle Indiana. There was a Jag mark 10 in town, owned by Dr. Ann a GP. One day about 1965 I was riding my bike along the main drag and a competition blue 289 Cobra drove by. I remember it like it was yesterday. My dad's boss also had a 3000 Healy and a bug eye sprite. Other cars were mostly Muscle cars or basic transportation. I bought a sprite when I was at Ball State, a 61. It was very tired but handled like a go kart. The next two sports cars I owned were Miatas. Then the Cobra 427. I also had a track only Lotus 7 and a Reynard Formula Ford. The FF was the best to drive. The Cobra is hard to beat overall. |
Well, the driveway content in my formative years contained nothing even remotely exotic.
I grew up on a market garden, so the usual vehicles to be seen in our ‘driveway’ were a Holden station wagon, trucks, and tractors. In fact, the first vehicle I owned (at age ~12) with four wheels and an engine was a '30s vintage Howard tractor (previously my grandfather's). That was around the time that my brother and I received a Scalextric slot car set for Christmas; he was older so he got the red Cobra and mine was the green 289FIA (hence my avatar; it's always on my desk) Probably the most exotic vehicle ever seen at the market garden was my '76 Alfetta, which I’ve now had for 36 years. Yes, the Cobra is hard to beat. Cheers! Glen |
Since I painted my Cobra BRG, I think (IMHO) you picked the right one Glen :) Bet it was faster then the Red one too.

I'm still here, and can provide an answer to some of the comments. The Ferrari is actually a 330 GTC, circa 1967, and as I learned after buying it in 1974, was a unique car. The original owner was Emilio Nasi, the managing director of Pininfarina, and the car had a number of unusual body features that today would probably make it more valuable than the Cobra (CSX 3121).
The Tiger was our second of the breed, having ordered one new at the Paris Auto Show 10/64. In the old days, there were few options for wider wheels that would work with the Sunbeam bolt pattern They're all long gone. I tracked the Cobra's current owner down last year, and we had a number of good conversations about it. He's rich, eccentric, and a true car guy. |
Thank you marcoscx3121, for the feed back. And clearing up the Ferrari ID, since we still have you around, is the GT-350 a "Kelly" or "Forest" green (I believe that's what it was called) also is it a GT-350H? And yes the wheel's for Tiger's back then were very limited. What a wonderful group of cars to own, just one of those, would be a "Sports Car guy's dream" and you owned all of them, Just WOW. The Shelby (6S 1316) was a 4 speed non Hertz car,, and was my wife's daily driver for a year. The car is still in new Jersey,
