FE Remote oil filter threads - help please
 
Hi guys,

So I have my remote oil filter, painted black as in the pix. Obviously, to connect the oil pipe(s), I have to us a male to male coupling and an AN 10, 90 deg or135 deg elbow.
I can't quite get my head around the threads where the yellow arrows are. Are they normal AN 10, in which case how do you seal the thread as there is no machined face on the casting, now power coated black?
I've tried a taper coupling 1/8 NPTF, but that won't even go in.
Does anybody know whether the male to male couple is tapered on one side and what the thread that goes into the casting is?

Mike - The threads on both my block adapter and remote filter for the oil lines are 1/2 NPT.

Those are usually 1/2" NPT if the thread is NPT. I would hesitate at going with anything more than a 45 degree AN10 fitting for your hoses. A 90 degree or more fitting will cut down on the oil flow and could increase the risk of starving a bearing.

Thanks Chris and guys. I borrowed a 1/2" NPT tap today and all is well. The threads were well under tapped by around 3/8" of depth, but now they match those on the block adapter diameter wise and the coupling sits nicely. A lot happier today. Thanks.

careful there, how are you determining the threads were short 3/8 of an inch.
NPT=national pipe taper.....TAPER,..... they are tapered to make the seal. the correct depth is determined by a thread gauge, by tapping them deeper you may very well have made the threads unusable, unfortunately you won't know until you put pressure to it

I understand the taper thread principle. However the coupling would not enter the unit at all. They were undertapped. Retapping them deeper is all that was required and I did it in stages. Don’t worry the coupling is still 1/4 off bottoming out, when fully tightened.
