I had a buddy who had to buy a set of Whitworth tools to rebuild the engine on a Norton Combat Commander. Too bad Whitworth didn't build the bike; it handled like a dream, ran like a raped ape, but wore out way too fast.

Here in CT, there was a precision tool shop called Moore Special Tool in Bridgeport. They used to make the industry standard measuring devices and tools. There was a room of flat stone tables that were used constantly for measuring purposes. The most skilled guys there would hand lap the stones every so often (on a schedule) to keep them in true. As I recall, the lapping process was all done by hand. Reference stones were used to monitor progress and validate. These stone tables were quite large.
There were some Moore tools that lived inside of oil filled plastic mist boxes, perhaps 10 feet by 10 feet. These tools would be used for ultra critical measurements and milling and the oil mist would maintain the environment with a rather sophisticated cooling and heating sub-system. You could think of it as a Bridgeport inside a glass box. BTW, speaking of Bridgeport, they were one of Moore's largest and perhaps closest customers.

I had a 67 MGB and if I remember right, I found one Whitworth. Can't recall exactly where, but believe it was the distributor. |

SU Carbs and fuel pumps were Whitworth, as were some Smiths Instruments and senders. |

I'm assuming that Bridgeport CT is the home of Bridgeport milling machines?
And that Moore & Wright micrometers would have some connection to Moore Special Tool ?
Nice video Bob. Astounding that Whitworth could produce a 'perfect' spiral hexagonal bore rifle around 150 years ago.

I have two pistols and a custom 22-250 AI with hexagonally rifled barrels. The hexagonal rifling came on the pistols. I liked the way it shot so well I went on a pilgrimage to find a 22 caliber rifle barrel because I couldn't get one made 35 years ago.
I found the barrels in Argentina on an electric Gatling gun and after some challenges got one for my rifle build. Very nice but today's crop of match grade barrels shoot just as well if not better — of course my barrel wasn't match grade it was military electric Gatling gun grade. :)

The 59 Ferrari 250 had some metric, some us, and some whitworth. They used whatever parts worked without regard to standardization.
