starting problems
I am running a stroked 351 with Edelbrock ProFlo 2 direct injection. In the last couple of months it has been harder and harder to start. For first start It cranks over about 10 to 12 times before it will start. If I turn it off or start it about 1 hour later, it takes about 3-4 cranks to start. When I turn the key on I hear the high pressure fuel pump under the car go on to load the line. Also, the line pressure on the gauge under the hood reads 40psi and drops to about thirty when I crank it. I've tried adjusting the cold start mode to 10,20,30% with really no change. Could it be a bad engine fuel pump? How can I test it.

Sounds like the fuel pressure regulator or the pump. I am assuming you have a fuel return line back to the fuel tank. Is there a vacuum line to the fuel pressure regulator or is it manually set?
1) try pinching off the fuel tank return line, two reasons, first to try to start the engine, second to monitor fuel pressure to compare it to the previous pressure. 2) if the pressure regulator is vacuum check to see if fuel is getting into the vacuum hose, if there is fuel present the regulator diaphragm is bad. 3) check the fuel pump output pressure. 4) check how fast the fuel pressure bleeds down after the fuel pump is switched off. This will check how the fuel injection components are, injectors leaking, fuel pressure regulator leaking, fuel pump bleeding back, etc. Your system manufacture should have some kind of range for the system bleed down vs time (minutes of time). Some manufactures systems operate at different pressures at different times, cold engine, hot engine, starting, cruising, etc, what are your manufactures specifications? |
