Does this look strange

I am looking at this Contemporary Cobra and have a question about the data tag. Please see the attached picture. Is this how the tag was attached? It almost appears that the tag was cut out and then replaced. Any information would be helpful.

That looks right to me. Just like CCX3209.

The tag and rivets look correct, but in your photo, my concern is what the tag is riveted to. It appears to be a seperate piece. I will try to send you a photo.

Looks like someone has fabricated an alluminum panel and made a hole for the plate to be seen through.

L79v 03-31-2019 11:36 AM

I would not even consider the car. Why would some one cut out the tag?

RUFdriver 03-31-2019 12:18 PM

Red flag! Forget this car and move on to the next one.

I think CompClassics is right. It doesn't look like the tag has been removed, rather a non-original aluminum panel has been fitted and a cutout made so the tag shows through.

That's what it looks like to me. The tag is attached to a frame / chassis member, while the aluminum plate has a cutout so the tag remains visible.

OTOH, it looks like the two upper rivets were installed AFTER the aluminum panel was installed, as the heads appear to be on top of the panel. Hmmm.... It might not be nefarious, as it would be easy to drill out the old rivets, install the panel, then re-install the rivets.

A photo from further back to provide context would be helpful.

It is not uncommon for the engine compartment to be lined with aluminum panels on cars of this vintage. On the right side just forward of the fire wall, there is a raised area just slightly larger than the ID plate. The plate was riveted to that raised area. If aluminum sheeting has been constructed for the engine well, then the hole cut through that aluminum sheet would make the ID plate visible without removing it. That appears to be what you are looking at. If this is not located on the RH side just forward of the firewall, then there may be something else happening.

The photo shows a raised area below the plate, so that part checks out. I can't imagine there's more than one raised area on the frame.

The explanation is right on the tag. "Federal Law Prohibits removal" so they couldn't have removed it, placed the aluminum panels on and then re-attached the tag like most of us would want to!

spdbrake 04-02-2019 01:58 PM

Probably Darrell or his other brother Darrell was scared to remove the plate due "Federal Law" and cut around it. Also probably leaves the tags on mattresses and pillows. Its hard to get down to Nit-Wit level and cipher what they were/weren't thinking.

The warning wouldn't stop me. Unless those pop-rivets are serialized or otherwise somehow unique, they'd never know.
