There's a small block Unique listed in this story for $36K. https://www.rcnmag.com/fresh-finds/three-cobras-for-35k

ERA FIA 2092 $59K: http://www.clubcobra.com/classifieds...uct=7391&cat=2

Unique FIA $33K: http://www.clubcobra.com/classifieds...uct=7387&cat=2

Unique Slabside $35K. Looks like the same one listed in the Reincarnation Magazine article: http://www.clubcobra.com/classifieds...uct=7386&cat=2

just having some fun here...
list of biggest factors and value for each:
big vs small block: too many variables but if hp is say 500 does engine size matter?
4-5-6 speed trans: 6 speed + 5k, 5 speed 2.5k
fuel injection vs carb: fi + 3k
make of car: big difference
289 vs 427 style: no difference?
other factors?

I just did one back on June 3! Great tour! Sold me

I should have about $75K invested in my ERA slabside. 289 SBF, T-5 trans, RAM clutch

ERA: $45k or so including options

Wheels and tires: approx $5K

Paint: $8,500

Engine/drivetrain: $15k from Brent Lykins

Plus a few thousand more in tools, etc.

The car won’t be a roller when I get it. ERA will bond the body and install the rear suspension.

I'm slightly ahead of what you expect to have in your Slabside when completed. My Slabside, a turnkey was completed in June 2014.

500 HP is a lot easier to get with a big block than a small block.

fastd 06-18-2019 09:48 PM

500 HP pretty easy in a 351w.

Given that the slabside rides on either 205/70r15 or 215/65r15 tires, 500hp would seem superfluous.

fastd 06-19-2019 01:33 PM

my point wasn't with respect to sideslabs. it was tryibg to value the importance of "goodies" like 500 hp (be it from a big block or a mid block like a 351w), 6 speed trans, fuel injection, other...

Hmmm, I think fastd was really just making fun of small blocks. You know, basically saying that a small block in a 427 style car is for pussies. Frankly, I'm shocked... shocked, I say....:D

patrickt trying to stir things up...?

ok. i'll play. first, you misunderstood my meaning.

my question was: if there is an engine that produces 500 hp does it matter from a value perspective whether it comes from a small block or big block?

my personal bias is against big blocks however: i prefer smaller blocks because i personally prefer higher revving engines that feel "lighter" than how big blocks typically behave.

no offense meant to anyone - just my personal taste - wouldn't have mentioned it but patrickt called me out.

I haven't posted in a while myself but this brought me out of the woods....

In answer to the original post- how long is a piece of string?
Eg:
I've got $40k in the engine alone, and yes, I got a great deal. When you start playing with exotic parts the dollars will rack up.

I'm with Patrick- figure on six figures.

Good luck with it all.

...and ps:

Generally speaking big blocks cost more than small blocks but the real issue is the body. You wouldn't put a big block in a slabside or FIA and you probably shouldn't put a small block in a 427 S/C.

fastd 06-20-2019 02:38 PM

agree dacobb.

seems like fia/slabside has gained in popularity vs the 427 (although I guess 427s are still 80% ish of the market)

My SBF will have around 400HP and that is more than enough in a 2500lb car with skinny tires.

Now, you could build a 427 S/C with a rip-snortin' big block with over 500hp, but make sure to update your will.

I've priced it out to the nuts and bolts, using used drivetrain components, and it is "just" doable. The Hurricane is a VERY complete kit, and as long as you stay away from options, it can be done.

Add another $7-12k+ for the latter for a finished roadster and that is without any mods that all builders do. I always say look at $45-50k+ to have complete finished Factory Five.

For FFR, you'd have to do a donor car build to come it $30k, and donor cars are becoming much, much harder to find.

The Hurricane is a more complete kit, and you could just get it in at right around $30k if you were frugal, and used a 5.8L junkyard motor, used transmission, etc....

As far as $7-12k in paint, that is completely up to the individual owner. I guarantee you that Lynn Park's "Son of Dirt Bag" doesn't have $7-12k in paint on it, for instance.

As far as "any mods all builders do" that is your opinion and somewhat hyperbolic.
