Fan wiring question

I'm rewiring my Spal fan [ I can't even see the relay that was originally installed in my cobra] so I'm going to put a new relay in the engine compartment for convenience.

1) Can I come off the alternator Batt. post for the 30 side of the relay and fuse it?

2) Can I tap into the fan power wire (87) for a fan indicator light?

It's a single 16" puller.

Yes, and Yes

In fact. most SPST type relays have 2 #87 posts, so you could run one to the fan, and the other to the indicator light, if you wanted to...

I guess you're using different relays than I am. I've never seen a duplicate 87 post.

Thanks. I’ll see what the spal relay looks like with the wiring kit.

You can search the net and get wire diagrams their are also kits sold. Find one that you like for your setup.

I have seen many with dual 87 posts, 5 pin.

Not to be confused with a normal 5 pin relay which has 87 and 87a, where 87a/30/87 forms a spdt changeover contact.

Using that type of relay you can make a trembler coil to get you home in emergencies.
You hook a wire from the closed contact 87a to the relay trigger wire of the relay and to a spare coil with a condensor. As the relay pulls in the 87A disconnects and the relay goes live to 87A again. This happens so fast you'll get a constants stream of sparks from the coil. You disconnect the centre lead from the dizzy and you put the lead from the trembler coil into the centre and as you crank the engine you connect the trembler coil to the + Battery. It'll run rough but it will get you home if your ignition fails.

When you live in a country that's upside down, you can get all sorts of weird stuff.

Yes you can tap the BATT post for a power supply for the fan or better yet the HOT side of your starter solenoid. Reason being: That terminal and wiring connected to it is usually unprotected with a fuse.
You want your fan to come on when you park the car after a ride due to “heat soak” so running full time power to the fan (via a relay) is the best option and use a temperature activated switch in the radiator or coolant line which interrupts a ground circuit, which triggers a relay to cycle the power to the fan on and off. If you wire it this way DO NOT introduce any kind of “+” source to this ground circuit of the relay or you will fry everything. (NO indicator light)

Blas are you saying NOT to introduce an indicator light on the #87 wire which goes between the fan and the relay?
I wanted to have it so I could tell if my fan was running.

and

I was going to use the Batt post on the alternator or the starter AND fuse that wire going to the #30 side of the relay. Is this alright?

I am curious that an indicator light on the #87 wire going to the fan would see high amps that the fan is drawing. The wires on the light that I ordered are small gauge and I am concerned. Should I be?

I was going to use a go manual and use a toggle switch instead of a temp sensor. An indicator light on the switch serves me no purpose

You could have a warning lamp connected to 87 in parallel with the fan, BUT the warning lamp will dim off slowly as the fan winds down.

You really need a relay with two separate 87s that are made with the 30 when the relay operates.

A double make contact, not a double tagged 87 which is really only a single contact.

I’m saying that if you wire the fans the same way that Superformance does, the ground trigger wire cannot have any path to a “+” power source. More important than an indicator light is a manual fan switch.
