So what is the story about substituting 428's instead of 427s' ?

Is it because Ford could not supply 427's, as they were being directed to dedicated racing programs ? Or is it because Shelby could get the 428's cheaper from ford than the 427's, thereby increasing his profit margin for the 427 cobra's ?

Every time I see the thread title I can't help but think the reference is to the crook in New Hampshire.

What I read it was the latter. Ford raised the price on the 427 to $700 , so CS found he could get the Police 428 for $300 each, he figured most of his customers would never know the difference anyways. These are 1966 dollars of course. The story goes if a customer complained, he would replace the 428 for the proper 427. I wouldn’t put this past him at all.

I got a kick out of something Gurney said during an interview, something to the effect that Shelby wasn't encumbered by honesty...;-)
