Need advise on titling a CSX6000 in Washington
I recently sold my CSX that was registered in Alabama (no title issued to cars older than 1975) to a gentlemen in Washington and because the Cobra was registered as a 1965 Shelby Cobra, it was assumed that there wouldn't be an problem titling the car as a 1965 Shelby Cobra. When the new owner applied for a Washington title, he was told that it wouldn't be titled as a 1965 but instead, it would be titled as a 2011 Shelby Cobra. He has also looked into establishing a LLC in other states (i.e. Montana or Alabama) so he could run the car with out of state tags but I think he'll have the same issue if he ever attempted to title it as a 1965 Shelby Cobra.
So....has anyone else titled their Continuation car as a 1965 Shelby in Washington? If not, other than establishing a LLC in Alabama or Montana, are there any other options available? |
To begin with if you had used the search function you would have discovered a whole subforum dedicated to registrations:

Now to address your points: Virtually every place is on to the Montana LLC thing and when they catch you the fines and back fees and taxes and penalties make it not worth it. Colorado did a sweep of vehicles a number of years ago and it got a lot of people's attention and many MT plates were replaced with CO plates. Maybe you could contact one of the Shelby dealers to see if they have advice. Washington and Oregon have become part of the Left Coast and adopted most of CA's stuff. In those states you are unlikely to get it registered as a 1965 vehicle, but the real goal is to get it registered in such a manner that it isn't subject to modern emissions requirements, which a 1960s engine will never be since there is no OBDII, and testing requirements. Have the buyer call the state office and explain what he's got. Alternately, call some of the larger Cobra dealers, e.g., Hillbank (sells both Superformance and Shelby) since they likely have experience selling to owners in Washington. |
Thanks Tony but for the record, I did do a quick search and found most of the threads were old and more than likely, were not applicable. I agree there is significant risk going with the Montana option but they've already told him that the car would be registered as a 2011 so that's off the table.
He's also contacted SAI and they didn't recommend anything that hasn't already been discussed but I will direct him to contact the state office again and try to explain his situation. As far as dealing with the state reps, it seems that it's more about being lucky and finding someone who's already titled a Shelby vs trying to debate it with someone who doesn't know anything about titling continuation cars. I'll also ask him to contact Hillbank and ask them for guidance as well. Thanks again! |
One of the topics in the registration forum with washington in the title had names and numbers of helpful people. Old yes so people might have changed but positions might not have.

Tell the DoL that you want to register it under the custom rules.
The car qualifies, the state will push back. The want to title it using the MSO. I fought unsuccessfully with them for over a year to get collector plate. |

Talked with the owner and I don't know all of he details but he's been able to register the car as a 1965 with collector plates.
