Tire Replacement and Shops
Hey Guys/Gals,
I wanted to know how you guys approach a wheel shop when needing to replace your tires. Are most worried about scuffs /scratches on the wheels or not at all. Any particular shop you go to etc. I'm located in Miami, FL and I am sure there are alot of good shops here but mostly looking for recommendation. I really dont want to choose the wrong shop and get lip excuse with mounting my tires if something goes wrong. |
Have to ask around for who mounts a lot of custom wheels or is known to do a lot of sports car tire work. In my case I found a dealer that has a bunch of car guys employed that race-prep Miatas and has a real good reputation. You can check around and ask what kind of equipment they have and how they handle custom wheels but it's the people there that make the real difference. Either they understand custom and classic cars or they don't. One thing though for both my ERA and my old KO equipped Corvette - I never take the car to them and trust them with swinging hammers at KO spinners for removal and installation of the KO wheels. I take the wheels/tires off and carry them to them and pick them up and mount them myself so I know they are indexed and tightened properly.

Discount Tire has done a nice job on several tires on 2 different ERAs.
They dropped the balancer wing nut on one rim and very slightly nicked it. They replaced it with a new wheel with no drama. Also, like Dan, I always take wheels only to them. John |
I agree ... I take them off and take them to the shop. I was curious if I was alittle critical of thenmounting of the tires

I take them off and take them to a tire shop. I have certain shops I trust to mount and balance my Cobra tires

One other thing. Typically tire shops will get close when balancing tires and on a 4500 pound car that works.
On a 2400 pound car, I can feel 1/4 ounce out of balance. I always tell them I want it dead on or I will be back. John |
Thanks Grubby
This is good to know. I am running into this problem with my truck. Actually it’s too many weights to apply the proper weight, spanning a large section of the tire. The machine states how and where. What is so hard about applying the weight to just that location on the rim. |
