Sounds wise, but our military wears bulletproof vest and jumps out of planes every day from the low bidder.

Every part made to put man on the moon was the low bidder. It works if you give detailed bid packages, sign well written legally binding contracts, and inspect every part purchased, to assure it is exactly what the contract calls for.

This is one of the few things our government does very well and most companies fail to do. IMHO

All good if, as you pointed out, bid packages are detailed (including quality specifications) and there's proper QA assurance. Failure to do so gets you situations like the MCAS on the 737 Max.
