I know this will sound a bit goofy, but most private detectives have a background in law enforcement and usually have many old buds who still serve on some police forces. I'd bet using their "contacts" they could turn the car up pretty quick. It'll probably be a quick easy job for a good private detective and the fee wouldn't be so large, assuming you still have the VIN handy. Might be something to consider. Make a few calls about the viability of finding it and what the expected fees would be. You might be pleasantly surprised.

Few states any more retain the original VIN and assign a different VIN. Registration databases probably won't have the original VIN if that has happened.
