problem with steering wheel shake

when I am driving on the street or highway and hit a pot hole or large bump in the road, my steering wheel shakes very bad. Steering box? control arms?

Yes - either or all of those or even suspension bushes.

It could be a case of bump steer depending on how the car is set-up.

Check your shocks for leakage, could be shot.

If your shocks have dampening you may be set too low. My AC did this as it was on the softest setting causing bounce. Once I dialed it up, handles like a dream.

Not knowing what make or how your steering is set up I can only speak of my own experience...I have a Mustang II set up and it was terrible and scary to drive over any kind of rough road...I had it lined up twice with no difference in the shake that I would experience...What I did was put my car on my lift and with out lifting it I measured the height of the body to top of tire and the width from center of tire to center of tire...then I lifted the car and removed the shocks which would let me move the suspension through its normal travel more easily...what I found was about 1 inches difference in width through normal travel of the suspension...so I bought a Bump-Steer eliminator kit for my style of front end and installed it myself...after a lot of measuring and trial and error and another alignment it is a lot better...not prefect but now I just get more of a vibration when I hit a bump or pothole...steve

What tire pressure are you running?

27 in the front, 25 in the back.

Steve,

Most likely its blown front shocks. The shaking after bumps is common with blown/leaking shocks on the BMW E36 suspension, which your car has. If you own a BDR?

Your profile does not reflect the model car you own or build #. Its helpful for folks responding to you with assistance to know what you own.

If you do a search in the Backdraft forum for "Shocks" you will find a few threads with part numbers, and instructions. Also it would be a great time to add Camber plates from IconicParts.com while you have the strut assys apart.

Check your rear wheels for tire hop. Feels like front end issue but is cause by rear wheel hop.
