superformance wheel question
I have seen 2 different superformance cobras on the web that were sporting 5 lug , 5 spoke (60's style blk spokes with silver outside rim) looked awesome. my question is were these SFC cars ordered as 5 lug and not pin drive or does SP use pin drive adapters over stock style hubs that would allow the owner to convert back?

Superformance uses adapters to get to the "knock-off" system. Offsets the wheel out about 5/16 or maybe 3/8". You can find the parts at Vintage Wheel.
There were 2 maybe 3 versions of the adapter / wheel system. Not sure they were interchangeable. Jim |
SPF Pin Drive to Lug Nut wheel conversion
Many early Superformance chassis numbers (pre-200 ish) used bolt on wheels with well made looking fiberglass wheel overs and spinners that almost look like the Halibrand wheels. After chassis 200 ish they pretty much came standard with wheel adapters on and knock off wheels.
The wheels studs are slightly shorter to clear the drive pins for the adapters, and if you wanted to run lug nut style wheels in place of the adapters, you'd need to install longer studs front and rear. Side note: If you wanted to run steel wheels which are typically thinner, the studs for the drive pins might just be long enough for the steel wheels too. For thicker aluminum lug nut wheels, the exposed thread for the lug nut to fasten to is significantly less and not advised. Hope that helps! If you have any other Superformance questions feel free to call me |
I have a set of the early SPF "bolt-on" chrome steel with "Halibrand" style insert retained buy a knock-off available.
